Chapter 9 - BEGGING IN THE DIRT

Three weeks later.
The autumn leaves swirled across the long, tree-lined driveway of the Montgomery Manor—Claire’s ancestral family estate in upstate New York, which Marcus Sterling had successfully liberated from Margaret’s fraudulent liens.
The estate had been fully restored to its historic grandeur. In the sunlit garden, Lily was laughing on a soft cashmere blanket, clapping her hands as she watched butterflies dance above the rose bushes. Claire sat on the stone terrace, reviewing the quarterly expansion reports for Apex-Vance. The company’s stock had soared forty percent since the rebranding.
The heavy iron security gates at the end of the driveway buzzed.
Harris’s voice came over the intercom. "Mrs. Montgomery-Hayes, Daniel Hayes is at the gate. He has broken his bail perimeter conditions. He is demanding to see you."
Claire took a slow sip of herbal tea. "Let him walk up the drive, Harris. Keep security close."
Five minutes later, a pathetic figure stumbled up the gravel path.
Daniel looked unrecognizable. His bespoke suits were gone, replaced by a stained, rumpled jacket. His face was gaunt, his eyes hollow with dark circles, and his hands shook uncontrollably. He had lost everything: his wealth, his reputation, his mistresses, and his freedom. The loan sharks had seized his cars and penthouse, and his federal trial was set to begin on Monday.
Daniel reached the bottom of the terrace steps and fell to his knees in the gravel.
"Claire..." Daniel sobbed, tears cutting lines through the dirt on his cheeks. "Please... I’m begging you. Talk to the prosecutor. Tell them it was all Margaret’s fault. Tell them I didn't know about the stolen inheritance."
Claire stood up, walking slowly to the edge of the terrace balustrade, looking down at him.
"You knew, Daniel," Claire said, her voice quiet and calm. "You knew every time you signed those falsified tax returns. You knew every time you belittled me and told me I was a parasite living off your hard work."
"I was stupid! I was blinded by Vanessa!" Daniel wept, pressing his forehead against the cold stone steps. "I love you, Claire! I love Lily! We can be a family again. Take me back. Let me work as an assistant... let me sweep the floors at Apex! Just don't let them send me to prison!"
Claire looked down at the man who had abandoned his eight-month-old daughter in a midnight thunderstorm without a second thought.
"Do you remember what you said to me when you pointed at the door, Daniel?" Claire asked softly.
Daniel looked up, terror in his eyes.
"You said: 'Get out. I’m done wasting my life on you,'" Claire quoted, every syllable sharp as a diamond blade. "And you asked Margaret to throw me that suitcase."
Claire stepped back, turning her back on him.
"You gave me that suitcase, Daniel. And it gave me back my life. Harris, remove this trespasser and hand him over to the federal marshals."
Two security officers hauled Daniel up by his arms as he shrieked and begged, dragging him down the gravel path toward the waiting law enforcement vehicles at the gate.

Claire didn't look back once. She picked up Lily, holding her warm little body close, and walked back into the warmth of her home.
