Chapter 3 - THE FROZEN EMPIRE

The master bedroom of the Hayes estate smelled of French perfume and fresh lilies. Vanessa stretched luxuriously against the Egyptian cotton sheets, admiring the three-carat diamond ring Daniel had slipped onto her finger only hours after Claire walked out.

Downstairs in the kitchen, Margaret was humming as she poured freshly brewed espresso into porcelain cups. "The air in this house already feels cleaner without that peasant moping around," Margaret sneered, sliding a cup toward Daniel. "Now you can marry Vanessa properly. Her father’s connections will take Apex Construction to the national level."

Daniel adjusted his bespoke Italian tie in the microwave's reflection, his ego swelling. "Claire was a weight around my neck, Mom. She never had ambition. Today, I sign the fifty-million-dollar Harbor Point waterfront contract. By tonight, we celebrate."

Daniel pulled out his black titanium corporate card to pay his private driver via his phone app.

Transaction Declined.

He frowned, tapping the screen again. Error: Account Restricted by Legal Fiduciary Hold.

"What is this nonsense?" Daniel muttered. He opened his banking portal. His personal checking account balance read: $0.00 (Frozen). His corporate operating line: $0.00 (Under Audit).

Before he could dial the bank, his phone exploded with incoming calls. It was Apex’s Chief Financial Officer, Frank Bradley.

"Daniel! What the hell is going on?" Frank yelled through the speaker. "The state marshals just walked into headquarters with a court injunction! All company disbursements are locked down! The payroll server is quarantined, and the City Municipal Board just sent a notice that our bid deposit check of two million dollars bounced!"

"Bounced?!" Daniel roared, his face turning crimson. "That's impossible! I have ten million in liquid reserves!"

"Not anymore!" Frank panicked. "The injunction was filed by Sterling & Vance on behalf of the majority shareholder. Daniel, they’re claiming grand larceny and fiduciary fraud dating back five years! Who is behind this?"

Margaret dropped her espresso cup. The porcelain shattered across the marble island. "Sterling? Arthur’s old lawyer? But Arthur is dead!"

Daniel’s blood ran cold. His mind snapped back to the rainy doorway, to Claire standing in the cold holding the battered brown suitcase Margaret had thrown at her feet.

His hands shook as he dialed Claire's number.

It rang once. Claire answered on the second ring, her background quiet, filled with the soft clinking of china and the peaceful coo of baby Lily.

"Claire!" Daniel bellowed, pacing across the kitchen. "What sick game are you playing? Did you steal company files before you left? Did you run to Arthur’s old cronies? Call off this injunction right now or I will have you arrested for extortion!"

"Good morning, Daniel," Claire’s voice came through the line, icy, smooth, and utterly devoid of fear. "I see you received the notification."

"You have five minutes to fix this!" Daniel screamed, sweat breaking across his forehead. "Vanessa and I have an investor luncheon, and the Harbor Point contract closes at noon! You are ruining my life!"

"Your life?" Claire let out a quiet, chilling laugh. "Daniel, you haven't even begun to pay for what you stole. Enjoy your morning coffee. We’ll be seeing each other very soon."

The call went dead.

Daniel stared at the blank screen, the silence in the kitchen suffocating. Outside, the screech of heavy tires echoed up the driveway as three black luxury SUVs pulled up to the gated entrance of the estate.
