Chapter 7 - THE ENEMY OF MY ENEMY

At 9:45 PM, the lounge at the St. Regis Hotel was enveloped in soft jazz and amber lighting. Daniel walked in, wearing an oversized trench coat to hide his trembling frame. He clutched an encrypted black hard drive in his right coat pocket.

He spotted Julian Vance sitting at a secluded leather booth in the back, sipping twenty-year-old scotch. Julian was a formidable man in his early forties, impeccably dressed, with eyes as sharp as obsidian.

Daniel slid into the booth opposite him, breathing heavily. "Do you have the offshore routing numbers ready?"

Julian took a slow sip of his drink and set the crystal glass down on a silver coaster. "You look terrible, Daniel. Kicking your wife and newborn out into a storm seems to have aged you ten years in twenty-four hours."

Daniel grimaced. "Claire is a vindictive witch who manipulated my senile father. Forget about her. On this drive are the complete engineering secrets and kickback networks for the Harbor Point project. You can underbid Apex by eight million and take the contract tomorrow morning. Ten million wire, and it’s yours."

Daniel slid the hard drive across the polished table.

Julian didn't touch it. Instead, he raised a single finger to signal the waiter.

A moment later, a woman walked out from the shadowed corridor behind the bar and slid smoothly into the booth beside Julian.

Daniel’s breath caught in his throat.

It was Claire.

She was dressed in an emerald green silk dress, radiating calm elegance and undisputed power. She looked at Daniel not with anger, but with the cold indifference one might show to a speck of dust on a windshield.

"Good evening, Daniel," Claire said softly.

"What... what is this?" Daniel stammered, his eyes darting between Julian and Claire. "Julian, she’s bluffing! Apex is on the verge of collapse! Buy this drive and you own the market!"

Julian leaned forward, his voice dripping with disdain. "Daniel, my family has competed with the Hayes family for forty years. Arthur Hayes was an honorable rival. You, however, are a pathetic thief who uses counterfeit steel and steals from his own wife's inheritance. Did you really think I would buy stolen, criminal files from a man facing twenty years in federal prison?"

"You... you set me up!" Daniel gasped, jumping to his feet.

"Julian reached out to me the moment you called him," Claire said, picking up the hard drive from the table and sliding it into her purse. "Apex and Vance Enterprises signed a joint-venture consortium agreement at 6:00 PM today. We are co-developing Harbor Point with legitimate capital, certified American steel, and total transparency."

Daniel backed away from the booth, knocking over an empty chair. "You can't do this to me! I built everything! You are nothing without me!"

"You didn't build anything, Daniel," Claire said, looking him dead in the eye. "You just spent my money, signed my contracts, and took the credit. And now, the bill has come due."

Two plainclothes detectives stepped out from the bar entrance, flanking Daniel on either side.

"Daniel Hayes, you are being served with a federal subpoena for the Southern District Grand Jury. Surrender your passport immediately."
