Chapter 8 - The Gala Reckoning

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel glittered under massive crystal chandeliers for the annual New York Real Estate & Infrastructure Gala. Over five hundred city officials, billionaire developers, and media executives were in attendance.

Despite being stripped of his company and facing an impending grand jury indictment, Daniel had posted bail using a predatory high-interest loan shark. Clinging to the delusional belief that his charisma could save him, he arrived in a rented tuxedo, determined to appeal directly to the Mayor and wealthy private lenders for a bailout.

Beside him walked Margaret, out on bail herself, her neck covered in gaudy synthetic pearls to mask the bruises from her arrest.

"Walk with your head high, Daniel," Margaret hissed through gritted teeth as cameras flashed. "Show them we are still the Hayes dynasty. Once we get private funding, we’ll sue Claire into bankruptcy."

Daniel forced a tight smile, raising a champagne glass toward a group of hedge fund managers. But as he approached, the men turned their backs, whispering behind their drinks.

Suddenly, the ballroom lights dimmed, and the master of ceremonies stepped to the podium on the grand stage.

"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests," the MC announced, his voice echoing across the ballroom. "It is our honor to present the Keynote Address and the recipient of the City Visionary Award for the Harbor Point Waterfront Revitalization. Please welcome the new Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of Apex-Vance Enterprises... Mrs. Claire Montgomery-Hayes!"

The double doors at the side of the stage opened.

Claire walked into the spotlight. She was breathtaking. Dressed in a bespoke midnight-blue gown, her head held high, she carried herself with effortless grace and majesty. Beside her walked the Mayor of New York and Marcus Sterling.

The room erupted into thunderous applause.

Daniel stood frozen in the middle of the floor, his face draining of all color.

Claire stepped to the microphone, her voice warm, powerful, and commanding. "True building is not about glass and concrete. It is about integrity, accountability, and protecting the vulnerable. For too long, corruption and greed operated in the shadows of our industry. Tonight, we announce a new era: twenty percent of all profits from Harbor Point will fund safe housing for single mothers and early childhood healthcare."

The crowd gave a standing ovation.

Unable to contain his venomous rage, Daniel pushed his way toward the front of the stage, screaming at the top of his lungs.

"She’s a fraud! She stole my father’s company! She’s using stolen money!" Daniel roared, veins bulging along his neck.

The ballroom fell dead silent. Security guards swarmed the aisle within seconds.

Claire looked down from the podium at the man who had thrown her into the rain twenty-four hours earlier. She didn't flinch. She simply tilted her head.

"Daniel," Claire spoke into the microphone, her voice ringing crystal clear through the speakers. "You claimed you built everything. But the only thing you ever built was your own ruin."

At that moment, six uniformed FBI agents entered the back of the ballroom, led by the Assistant U.S. Attorney.

"Daniel Hayes. Margaret Hayes," the lead agent announced, displaying federal arrest warrants. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, bank fraud, wire fraud, grand larceny, and endangering public safety."

As the handcuffs clicked shut around Daniel’s wrists in front of five hundred elite peers and live national cameras, Margaret lost all control, screaming hysterically and kicking at the agents until she was carried out of the ballroom like a common criminal.
