Chapter 5 - CRACKS IN THE FOUNDATION

By 2:00 PM, Daniel and Vanessa had been escorted out of Apex Tower by building security, their personal belongings dumped into cardboard boxes on the rain-soaked sidewalk before a horde of financial reporters.

Banished to a luxury penthouse Daniel could no longer afford, the atmosphere was toxic.

"You told me you owned the entire company!" Vanessa screamed, throwing a crystal vase against the wall. "You told me you had fifty million in assets! I left a partner at a top law firm for you, and now you’re a broke nobody facing federal charges!"

"Shut up!" Daniel yelled, grabbing a bottle of scotch. "I'm not broke! I still have the Harbor Point project files on my encrypted drive. Julian Vance from Vance Enterprises will buy that data for ten million cash. We just need to stay afloat until I make the trade."

"And what about me?" Margaret cried from the sofa, clutching her chest. "They’re going to put me in prison, Daniel! That lawyer said the statute of limitations on the forgery hasn't expired because the money was continually laundered through Apex payroll!"

Daniel ignored his mother, his mind spiraling into reckless desperation. He picked up his burner phone and dialed Julian Vance—Apex’s fiercest competitor and Claire’s family rival.

"Vance," Daniel said, his voice ragged. "I have the structural blueprints, the city inspector kickback logs, and the proprietary bidding margins for Harbor Point. Ten million wire to an offshore account in the Caymans, and it's all yours. You can crush Claire before she even settles into the CEO chair."

On the other end of the line, Julian Vance paused. "Bring the drive to the St. Regis lounge tonight at 10:00 PM. Come alone."

Meanwhile, on the 30th floor of Apex Tower, Claire sat at Arthur’s old desk. In front of her, forensic structural engineers and accountants were reviewing the Harbor Point file Daniel had been managing.

"Claire, it's worse than we thought," said Elena Ross, the newly appointed Chief Operating Officer. "Daniel didn't just mismanage funds. To inflate his profit margins on the preliminary skyscraper bids, he approved substandard, counterfeit structural steel from an unlicensed overseas foundry. If this building had gone up with Daniel's specifications, it would have collapsed within five years."

Claire felt a cold shiver down her spine. Daniel’s arrogance hadn't just been greedy—it had been homicidal.

"Did he sign off on the safety certifications himself?" Claire asked.

"Yes. His personal signature is on every fraudulent compliance waiver," Elena confirmed. "He hid the real safety audits in an encrypted offline drive."

"He’ll try to sell that drive to Julian Vance to save himself," Marcus Sterling noted, stepping into the office. "Our surveillance team reports Daniel just made contact with Vance's private line."

Claire looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glowing Manhattan skyline. "Let him go to the meeting. Notify Federal Prosecutor Vance’s office."

Marcus smiled faintly. "Did you forget? Julian Vance's brother is the Chief of the Southern District Financial Crimes Division."

Claire turned around, her expression calm, deadly, and poised. "I didn't forget. Daniel walked into a trap he spent five years digging with his own hands."
