Chapter 6 - Desperate Moves

At 4:30 PM, the rain returned, drumming a steady rhythm against the windows of the elite nursery in Upper Manhattan where Lily was staying under the watch of Claire’s private security detail.
Down on the street, an unmarked silver sedan pulled up to the curb. Inside sat Margaret Hayes, her eyes wild with panic and exhaustion. Her makeup was smeared, and her hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles were white.
"If I have the baby, Claire will drop the charges," Margaret muttered to herself like a lunatic. "She's weak. A mother will give up everything for her child. She'll sign the shares back to Daniel."
Margaret slipped out of the car, pulling a dark raincoat over her head. She marched into the nursery's marble lobby, attempting to breeze past the reception desk.
"Excuse me, ma'am! You cannot enter without security clearance," the receptionist called out.
"I am Lily’s grandmother! I am here to pick up my granddaughter," Margaret snapped, pushing through the security turnstile.
Before she could take three steps into the hallway, two imposing men in dark suits blocked her path. Marcus Sterling’s lead security officer, a former Secret Service agent named Harris, stepped forward.
"Mrs. Margaret Hayes," Harris said coldly, pulling out a laminated court document. "You are in violation of an emergency emergency order of protection signed by Judge Miller two hours ago. You are prohibited from coming within five hundred feet of Claire Montgomery-Hayes or Lily Hayes."
"Get out of my way, you hired goons!" Margaret shrieked, lunging forward with her fingernails bared. "That baby belongs to my son!"
Within seconds, Harris expertly restrained Margaret, pinning her arms behind her back and forcing her to the floor without causing harm. Outside, the sirens of two NYPD cruisers wailed as they pulled up to the entrance.
Flashbulbs immediately went off. Claire had already tipped off the local press.
Ten minutes later, Margaret was dragged out of the nursery in handcuffs, her face plastered across every major news network with the headline: FORMER SOCIALITE MARGARET HAYES ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED CUSTODY KIDNAPPING AND RESTRAINING ORDER VIOLATION.
Across town at the penthouse, Vanessa watched the live broadcast on the giant flat-screen TV. Her wine glass slipped from her hand, shattering on the rug.
"She’s insane... they’re all going down," Vanessa whispered, terror overtaking her.
Vanessa rushed into Daniel’s office, broke open his personal safe, and grabbed six hundred thousand dollars in bearer bonds and Daniel’s backup luxury watches. She shoved them into a duffel bag, called an Uber to JFK Airport, and booked a one-way first-class ticket to Dubai.
As she reached the lobby of the apartment building, two federal agents in windbreakers blocked the glass revolving doors.
"Vanessa Moore?" Agent Miller asked, holding up his badge. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit corporate espionage and interstate transportation of stolen securities."
Vanessa’s knees buckled. "No... no! I didn't steal anything! It was all Daniel! Daniel gave me everything!"

"Save it for the grand jury, Ms. Moore," the agent said, snapping the steel cuffs onto her manicured wrists.
