Chapter 4 - Reclaiming the Throne

The 30th floor of the Apex Tower was a glass-and-steel monument to modern architecture. Normally bustling with high-strung executives and project managers, the floor was now locked in dead silence. Corporate security guards stood outside the main boardroom doors, looking nervous as whispers spread like wildfire through the cubicles.

Inside the boardroom, Daniel slammed his fist onto the mahogany conference table. Vanessa sat beside him, nervously clutching a designer handbag, while Margaret paced the perimeter like a caged hyena.

"This is an outrage!" Margaret screeched at the bewildered board members. "My son built this company from a garage workshop! Claire was nothing more than a glorified receptionist who happened to carry his child! She has no legal claim to this building!"

"Actually, Mrs. Hayes," a crisp, razor-sharp voice cut through the tension from the double doors. "She has every claim."

The heavy oak doors swung open.

Claire walked into the boardroom.

She wore a tailored charcoal-grey pantsuit, her long dark hair swept into an elegant chignon. Her posture was commanding, radiating an aura of untouchable authority. Flanking her were Marcus Sterling and four armed private security officers in tailored suits.

Daniel gasped, his jaw dropping. He had expected to see a tearful, broken woman begging for child support. Instead, the woman standing before him looked like an apex predator returning to her territory.

Vanessa stood up, trying to muster a haughty sneer. "You have no right to enter this meeting, Claire. You were evicted last night. Security, remove this woman!"

None of the security guards moved. Their commander stepped forward and bowed slightly to Claire. "Good morning, Madam Chairwoman."

"Madam Chairwoman?!" Daniel shouted, lunging forward until Marcus Sterling stepped between them, holding up a thick leather binder.

"Sit down, Mr. Hayes, before I have you handcuffed for contempt of a court injunction," Marcus said coldly. "As of 8:30 this morning, the Supreme Court of New York has validated the execution of Arthur Hayes’s testamentary trust. Due to documented felony forgery committed by Margaret Hayes in 2019, sixty-two percent of total voting equity in Apex Construction has been consolidated under Claire Montgomery-Hayes."

Marcus placed certified shareholder ledgers, forensic banking audits, and a high-resolution copy of Margaret’s forged signature directly in front of the board members.

The board members gasped as they reviewed the documents.

"This... this shows three point five million transferred directly from Claire's personal trust into the seed capital account," one senior director murmured, adjusting his glasses. "Daniel, you told us this capital came from angel investors."

"She’s lying! It’s a setup!" Margaret shrieked, lunging toward the table to snatch the papers.

"Touch those documents, Margaret, and the detectives waiting in the lobby will charge you with evidence tampering on top of grand larceny," Claire said. Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried the weight of an iron gavel.

Daniel turned pale, looking at Claire with genuine terror for the first time in his life. "Claire... please. Let’s talk about this privately. Think about Lily. You can’t destroy the company that feeds our daughter!"

"You didn't think about Lily when you tossed her into a rainstorm at eight months old so your mistress could sleep in my bed," Claire replied, her eyes boring into his soul. "As majority shareholder, my first official act is the immediate termination of Daniel Hayes as Chief Executive Officer and Vanessa Moore as Director of Marketing."

"You can't fire me!" Daniel roared. "You don't have the founder's physical seal! Under the corporate charter, no executive dismissal is valid without the physical seal Arthur locked in the corporate vault!"

Claire looked at him with pity. She reached into her handbag, pulled out a heavy, antique bronze stamp with Arthur’s initials engraved in gold, and pressed it firmly onto the dismissal order.

"Arthur left me the suitcase, Daniel," Claire whispered. "He left me everything."
