Chapter 8 - The Reading of the True Will

Two days later, Mr. Harrison summoned all the siblings to the old farmhouse for the formal reading of the estate documents. The living room was packed with tension. My husband’s siblings sat on the couch with arrogant smirks, paperwork in hand, ready to claim their perceived shares of the family farm and demand our immediate eviction.
Mr. Harrison unzipped his leather briefcase, adjusted his spectacles, and placed a pristine copy of Fiona’s certified will on the coffee table. “Before we begin,” the lawyer announced calmly, “I must clarify that the late Mrs. Fiona Miller held total legal autonomy over all her assets, which were transferred into a private trust five years ago.”

The siblings looked bewildered. “What trust?” the eldest brother barked, leaning forward. “She was an old penniless farmer on food assistance! We are her legal blood heirs!” Mr. Harrison didn't flinch. He cleared his throat and began reading the official declaration: “I, Fiona Miller, being of sound mind, leave zero dollars, zero land, and zero personal effects to my biological children: Richard, Susan, and Thomas. I leave my entire estate, property, and accrued trust to my daughter-in-law, Mabel.”
