Chapter 5 - Unraveling Fiona’s Silent Sacrifice

The letter continued with details that broke my heart into pieces. Fiona explained that every holiday when her other children came home for twenty minutes just to boast and leave empty baskets of cheap fruit, they would subtly ask if she had any hidden cash or savings accounts left to distribute before she passed away.

“They came looking for my estate, Mabel, but none of them ever asked if my knees ached or if I had eaten that morning,” the letter read. “They assumed because I wore patched sweaters and had no state pension, I was worthless. But I saved every dividend, every small interest payout, and every coin from my handmade quilts into that trust for the one person who stayed when darkness came.”

Fiona had instructed an old family attorney, Mr. Harrison, to finalize a legally binding will five years ago. Everything in that deposit box—accumulated high-yield treasury certificates, gold coins, and the full deed to the 80-acre Ohio farmland—was bequeathed solely to me and my son. Attached to the letter was the business card of Mr. Harrison, with a handwritten note: “Call him immediately after my burial.”
