Chapter 7 - The Bank Vault in Columbus

Early the following Monday morning, my husband Greg and I drove sixty miles south to the historic district of Columbus, where the small regional trust bank stood. My hands were shaking as we walked up the marble steps and requested a meeting with Mr. Harrison, the senior attorney mentioned in Fiona’s letter.
When Mr. Harrison entered the conference room, he looked at the brass key and the oilcloth letter, and a gentle smile spread across his weathered face. “Fiona spoke of your kindness every time she visited my office,” he said warmly. He escorted us down into the underground vault, where heavy steel doors creaked open to reveal safe deposit box #214.

Inside rested a leather binder containing official municipal deeds, government bonds, and a pristine collection of vintage gold bullion valued far beyond our wildest imagination. The total portfolio was worth well over $1.4 million, accompanied by an airtight, notarized last will and testament witnessed by two independent bank officers. Fiona had ensured there were no legal loopholes. Everything had been transferred directly into an irrevocable trust under my name.
