Chapter 1 - Twelve Years of Silent Devotion

My name is Mabel. When I married my husband at twenty-six, I stepped into a family already fractured by hardship. My father-in-law had passed away decades earlier, leaving my mother-in-law, Fiona, alone to raise four children on the meager earnings of rural Ohio farmlands. She farmed corn and soybeans her whole life without medical insurance, without a break, and certainly without a pension.

By the time I entered the household, her three biological children had long scattered across the country, building their own lives and rarely bothering to call, let alone visit. Fiona ended up living under our roof, growing frail and forgotten. Neighbors often whispered that I was acting more like an unpaid, full-time nurse than a daughter-in-law, betting that the other children would only show up when it was time to divide whatever was left.

I tuned out the gossip. While my husband worked long shifts in Chicago to make ends meet, I spent twelve years changing Fiona’s clothes, cooking warm oatmeal, administering pills, and waking up in the middle of freezing nights just to check if her frail chest was still moving. It was exhausting, but seeing her weathered hands tremble with every sip of water kept my heart anchored to her side.
