Chapter 9 - TRIAL BY FIRE

Maya screamed, burying her face into my waist. Baby Noah let out a startled cry, but I held him fiercely against my breast, using my own body as a human shield between my children and the monster I had fled.
"Don't touch them, Marcus," I said, my voice steady despite the adrenaline roaring in my ears like a freight train. "You don't care about these children. You only care about the Sterling trust fund."
"Smart girl," Marcus chuckled, taking a slow, predatory step forward, the gun never wavering from my forehead. "Noah is worth three billion dollars in trust distributions. And you... well, you're the leverage that guarantees Christian Sterling signs over his voting shares to Victoria and me without firing another bullet. Now, hand me the boy and walk."
"He's not a bargaining chip," I spat. "He's your victim."
"He's an asset!" Marcus yelled, his composure cracking, the dark, violent rage that I knew all too well flashing across his handsome features. He reached out with his left hand to rip Noah from my arms.
In that split second, my six years of emergency trauma training took over.
I didn't cower. I didn't beg.
With blinding speed, I reached into my cardigan pocket and pulled out the stainless-steel heavy epinephrine autoinjector I had grabbed from the nursery medical kit earlier. With all the force in my body, I slammed the three-inch steel needle directly into the side of Marcus’s neck, depressing the high-pressure hydraulic plunger.
Four milligrams of concentrated, pure adrenaline surged straight into his carotid artery.
Marcus shrieked in agony, dropping his weapon as the massive, instantaneous surge of cardiac stimulant hit his central nervous system, sending his blood pressure skyrocketing into lethal hypertensive crisis. His vision blurred, his hands clutched his throat, and he stumbled backward, gasping for air as his heart hammered violently against his ribs at two hundred beats per minute.
"You... you crazy b—" Marcus gasped, lunging toward me blindly.
He never reached me.
A towering shadow appeared in the vault doorway behind him. A hand like an iron vice clamped around Marcus's throat, lifting the grown man several inches off the floor, slamming him with bone-shattering force against the reinforced concrete wall.
Christian Sterling stood there, his face streaked with rain and gunpowder, his eyes blazing with an ancient, terrifying fury.
"You laid your hands on my family for the last time," Christian growled.
With a swift, brutal strike of his elbow, Christian shattered Marcus’s jaw, knocking him unconscious before he hit the ground like a sack of stones. Outside the vault, the blaring sirens of dozens of Italian Carabinieri vehicles and international tactical units echoed through the estate.
Christian kicked Marcus's limp body aside, dropped his weapon, and crossed the room in two strides. He wrapped his powerful arms around me, Maya, and Noah all at once, pulling us into a fierce, breathless embrace.
"It's over," Christian whispered against my hair, his voice breaking with raw emotion as he held us against his beating heart. "It's over, my love. You're safe."
We clung to him in the dim, red glow of the vault, our family finally reunited in the ashes of the storm.

Yet, as the Italian police poured into the lower levels to arrest Marcus and secure the perimeter, Lev looked up from his medical triage kit, his satellite phone glowing with an urgent, flashing red alert.
"Mr. Sterling," Lev said weakly, pressing a hand to his bandaged shoulder. "Victoria just released the press dossier. Every global media outlet has just published an exclusive accusing Clara of extortion and baby-farming. The Sterling board has just convened an emergency tribunal in Milan to seize the conglomerate."
