Chapter 5 - BLOOD AND INHERITANCE

The silence in the library felt like a physical weight pressing down upon my chest. I stared at the photograph of myself, clutching the crisp white paper until the edges crumpled beneath my trembling fingers.

Christian didn't flinch. He didn't offer a panicked excuse or turn away. He simply stood above me, his gray eyes darkening like storm clouds over the lake.

"Stand up, Clara," he said quietly.

"Did you orchestrate this?" My voice rose, raw with the betrayal that tasted like bile in my mouth. "Did you track me? Did you put me on that flight? Did Marcus sell me to you?!"

"Marcus Vance doesn't have the power to sell me anything," Christian snapped, the sheer ice in his tone cutting through my hysteria. "Get off the floor and listen to me."

He reached down, taking my arms and pulling me to my feet with effortless strength. He didn't let go; his large hands held my trembling shoulders firmly, grounding me in the reality of the room.

"Six months ago, when Sofia’s condition deteriorated, my medical team began searching for the most specialized neonatal bonding experts and pediatric trauma nurses in the Western Hemisphere," Christian explained, his voice low and intensely deliberate. "Your name was at the top of that list. Your published research on tactile infant regulation and maternal letdown synchronization was revolutionary."

I stared at him, stunned. "You... you knew who I was?"

"I knew your clinical brilliance. But before my team could formally contact you with an offer, Marcus Vance blocked our inquiries. He used his biomedical board connections to bury your credentials, discredit your research, and isolate you completely. When my intelligence team flagged your sudden purchase of a one-way economy ticket to Rome four days ago, I knew you were fleeing him. I changed my flight manifest to ensure Noah and I were on that exact aircraft."

"You used your own screaming son as bait?" I whispered, horrified.

"No," Christian said, a flicker of genuine anguish crossing his chiseled face. "Noah was truly suffering. I was desperate, Clara. I knew that if anyone in this world could save my son, it was the woman whose life work had been stolen by the monster she was running from. I didn't plan for the connection you and Noah shared—that was fate. But I planned to protect you."

Before I could process the staggering revelation, the heavy oak doors of the library were shoved open with violent force.

"How touching," a sharp, aristocratic voice dripped with venom from the entryway. "The widower and the peasant wet-nurse sharing secrets in the dark."

I spun around. Standing in the doorway was a striking woman in her late fifties, draped in an immaculate ivory Chanel coat, her silver hair swept into an austere chignon. Flanking her were two corporate attorneys in tailored Italian suits carrying leather briefcases.

Victoria Sterling. Christian’s ruthless stepmother and the majority stakeholder of the family's legacy shipping trust.

"Victoria," Christian said, his body instantly shifting to position himself between me and the intruders. "You have five seconds to leave my estate before security removes you in zip-ties."

"Save the theatrical bravado for your board of directors, Christian," Victoria sneered, stepping into the room and clicking her designer heels against the parquet. "We’ve just received the official Interpol bulletin from the American authorities. You are harboring an international fugitive accused of child abduction. The Italian Ministry of Justice has already signed the provisional inquiry."

She gestured toward me with a manicured hand dripping with diamonds.

"Hand over the girl and this common servant to the carabinieri waiting at the front gate," Victoria demanded, her lips curving into a predatory smile. "Otherwise, the trust will file an emergency petition with the High Court of Milan to declare you mentally unfit and strip you of legal custody of baby Noah by sunrise."

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. They were going to take Noah. They were going to hand Maya back to Marcus.

Christian stepped forward, his posture exuding a terrifying, absolute authority that made even the two veteran attorneys take a nervous step back.

"You're too late, Victoria," Christian stated with chilling composure.

"And why is that, stepson?"

Christian reached out, taking my cold, trembling hand into his large, warm fingers, interlacing our fingers tightly before lifting my hand to his lips, kissing my knuckles in front of everyone.

"Because Clara isn't an employee," Christian announced, his voice ringing with undisputed power. "She is my fiancée. And under Italian maritime diplomatic sovereignty, my future wife and her daughter possess full diplomatic immunity."

Victoria’s face turned an ugly, mottled red. "You're bluffing! You don't have a marriage license!"

"The ceremony will take place here tomorrow evening," Christian replied coldly. "Now get out of my sight before I buy your father's bank and liquidate it for scrap."

Victoria glared at us with pure, murderous hatred before spinning on her heel and storming out, her lawyers scurrying behind her.

The room fell dead silent. I pulled my hand back from Christian’s grip, my head spinning. "A fake marriage? Christian, you can't be serious! That's insane!"

"It's the only move on the board that saves Maya and keeps Noah with me," Christian said, turning to look at me, his eyes burning with an intense, unreadable fire.

Before I could argue, a piercing, bloodcurdling scream shattered the night from the upper floor.

Maya.
