Chapter 2 - The Sacred Bond

The air in the first-class cabin turned frigid, thick with the stunned silence of high-society spectators. The massive bodyguard, whose titanium lapel pin bore a subtle crest, took half a step forward, his hand pressing against my chest to physically bar my path.

"Step back, ma'am," the guard growled, his voice a low rumble beneath the hum of the twin jet engines. "Return to your seat immediately."

"Lev, stand down," the father commanded. His voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the space with the absolute finality of an executive gavel.

The tall man rose from his wide leather seat. Up close, he was imposing—well over six feet, with a jawline carved from granite and dark hair rumpled by hours of running desperate fingers through it. Dark circles shadowed his silver-gray eyes, but beneath the exhaustion lay a razor-sharp intellect taking in every millimeter of my appearance: my faded cotton cardigan, the cheap sneakers, the dark smudges under my eyes, and the faint, nervous tremor in my fingers.

"You have thirty seconds to explain why you think you can do what three pediatric specialists and my flight crew couldn't," he said coldly.

"He doesn't want synthetic silicone or warm formula," I said, keeping my voice calm, adopting the steady, measured cadence I used for years in the maternity ward. "He's overstimulated, terrified, and grieving a mother's touch. His nervous system is in full fight-or-flight. If you keep shoving plastic bottles into his mouth while he's hyperventilating, he's going to aspirate."

As if validating my words, the infant let out a raw, hoarse screech, his tiny face turning a dangerous shade of mottled purple.

The father flinched. That microscopic crack in his impenetrable armor told me everything: he was ruthless to the world, but he loved this child more than his own life. Without waiting for his permission, I reached out.

"Give him to me. Now."

For a heartbeat, I thought the billionaire would strike me or have his guard throw me back into the economy cabin. Instead, with hands that slightly shook, he transferred the swaddled bundle into my arms.

The moment the baby touched my chest, my body took over. I tucked his tiny head into the crook of my neck, right over my carotid artery where the heavy, steady thud of my pulse could reverberate through his skull. I unbuttoned the top two buttons of my cardigan, pressing his tear-streaked cheek directly against my warm skin, inhaling his baby powder scent mingled with the sour tang of regurgitated milk.

"Shh... I've got you, little one," I murmured, swaying in a rhythmic, gentle figure-eight pattern. "You're safe. Mama's right here. You're safe."

I found the small pressure point at the base of his spine, rubbing in slow, circular motions while humming a soft, low-frequency lullaby. Within thirty seconds, the shrieking hitch in his lungs softened to a ragged whimper. Within sixty seconds, his tiny, clenched fists relaxed, opening against my collarbone. His frantic breathing slowed, synchronizing with mine, until a deep, shuddering sigh escaped his small chest.

His heavy eyelids fluttered shut, and his head slumped into complete surrender against my neck.

Silence—pure, blessed silence—fell over the entire first-class cabin.

The actress lowered her sleep mask in disbelief. The flight attendant clasped her hands over her mouth, tears of relief shining in her eyes.

The billionaire stood motionless, staring at his sleeping son as though I had just parted the Atlantic Ocean with my bare hands. When his eyes finally lifted to mine, the cold arrogance was gone, replaced by a fierce, electrifying intensity that made my stomach flip.

"Who are you?" he murmured.

"My name is Clara. I'm... I was a neonatal nurse."

His gaze dropped to the fabric of my damp blouse, then shifted to my sleeve, which had ridden up during the rocking to expose a dark, yellowish-purple bruise wrapping around my wrist—the parting gift Marcus had given me before I shoved him into our glass table and ran for my life.

The billionaire's eyes narrowed dangerously. "Who did that to you, Clara?"

Before I could pull my sleeve down, the plane encountered violent turbulence. The seatbelt signs chimed frantically overhead, and the purser's voice crackled over the intercom: "Cabin crew, take your seats immediately. We are experiencing severe weather over the Alps."

Simultaneously, a sharp, encrypted chime rang from the satellite phone in the billionaire's suit pocket. Lev leaned in, glancing at the glowing screen, his face hardening instantly.

"Mr. Sterling," Lev whispered urgently. "We have a critical situation. Interpol Rome just received a red notice flag. A man named Marcus Vance just filed an emergency international warrant—claiming a woman matching her description abducted his child."

My heart stopped. I froze, clutching the billionaire's baby to my chest as Christian Sterling’s piercing gray eyes locked onto mine.
