Chapter 3 - INTERCEPTED AT DAWN

The cabin plunged several feet in the rough air, but the sudden drop in altitude was nothing compared to the sickening freefall inside my stomach. The air turned to ice in my throat.
Marcus.
He had tracked the flight manifest. He didn't just want me back; he wanted to destroy me using the international legal system. In the eyes of the law, Maya was his biological daughter, and without a finalized custody order, fleeing the country with her could be twisted into parental kidnapping.
"Mr. Sterling," Lev said, his hand already dropping toward his concealed shoulder holster under his tailored jacket. "Standard protocol requires us to distance ourselves from any individual flagged on an active alert. When we touch down in Rome in twenty minutes, Italian authorities will board the aircraft."
I backed away toward the curtain separating first class from economy, clutching the sleeping infant against my chest like a lifeline. Panic surged through my veins, hot and suffocating. My little girl was sitting three rows back in premium economy, clutching her worn stuffed bunny, completely unaware that the monster we were running from was about to tear us apart at the gate.
"Please," I gasped, my voice breaking as I looked at Christian Sterling. "Please, you don't understand. He's not trying to protect his daughter—he's trying to kill me. If he takes Maya back to Ohio, I will never see her alive again. Look at my wrist! Look at what he does!"
Christian didn't move. He stood tall in the rocking aisle, his presence dominating the cabin. His eyes flicked from my terrified face down to his son, Noah, who was sleeping peacefully against my chest for the first time in eighteen agonizing hours.
"Lev," Christian said, his tone deadpan, terrifyingly calm.
"Sir?"
"Call our maritime legal division in Milan and dispatch my private aviation team to Terminal 3. Contact the Chief of Border Police at Fiumicino Airport. Tell him Christian Sterling requires a diplomatic tarmac transfer."
Lev’s jaw tightened. "Sir, involving the Sterling name in an international custody dispute could trigger a media catastrophe for the conglomerate—"
"Did I ask for a risk assessment, Lev?" Christian’s voice dropped an octave, dripping with lethal authority. "I asked for a tarmac transfer."
He stepped closer to me, bridging the space between us until I could smell the rich, crisp scent of cedarwood, espresso, and luxury that clung to his coat. His hand reached out—not to grab me, but to gently cup the back of his sleeping son's head, his warm fingers brushing against mine. The contact sent an electric jolt straight down my spine.
"Where is your child, Clara?" he asked softly.
"Seat 14B," I whispered, trembling. "Maya. She's three."
"Lev, bring the girl into the private suite upfront. Now."
Within two minutes, Lev returned carrying Maya, who rubbed her sleepy eyes in confusion. The moment Maya saw me, she reached out her little arms. "Mommy? Why is the plane bouncing?"
"Everything is okay, sweetheart," I choked out, wrapping my free arm around her small waist, holding both children against me.
Christian knelt down on one knee on the cabin carpet so he was eye-level with my daughter. The ruthless titan of industry softened his expression, offering Maya a small, rare, gentle smile. "Hello, Maya. My name is Christian. You and your mother are going to come with me for a little while, alright? Nobody is going to hurt you."
When the wheels slammed onto the wet runway of Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport, flashing blue lights reflected off the rainy tarmac outside our windows. Four Italian police cruisers and two black unmarked SUVs were already idling near the gate.
"They're waiting at the jetbridge," Lev reported, staring out the window. "Marcus Vance must have called in a personal favor with the US Embassy."
Christian stood up, buttoning his charcoal suit jacket. The look in his eyes was cold enough to freeze fire.
"They can wait at the jetbridge until hell freezes over," Christian said coldly. "We're leaving through the rear service stairs directly into my convoy."
He turned to me, his silver eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that took my breath away.
"Listen to me carefully, Clara. The moment you step off this aircraft with me, you are no longer a runaway nurse with two hundred euros in your pocket. You will be under the absolute protection of the Sterling Empire. But in exchange, Noah needs you. He needs the comfort only you seem able to give him. Come with me to my estate in Lake Como as his exclusive guardian, and I will ensure your ex-husband spends the rest of his miserable life behind bars."
"And if Marcus finds us?" I asked, my voice shaking.
Christian’s jaw tightened into steel. "Then he will learn what happens when someone tries to touch what belongs to me."
We descended the wet metal stairs into the roaring Italian rain, shielded under massive black umbrellas held by private security. But as the door of the armored Maybach clicked shut behind us, my gaze caught a lone figure standing inside the tinted glass window of the VIP terminal lounge above.
He was holding a telephoto lens, snapping rapid photos of me entering Christian Sterling's car.

It wasn't the police.
It was Marcus's private enforcer. And he was already dialing a number.
