Chapter 8 - SIEGE IN THE NIGHT

Christian reacted with blinding speed. He pulled a concealed sidearm from beneath his jacket, chambered a round with a crisp metallic snap, and shoved me behind him into the reinforced corridor.

"Stay low and move toward the reinforced elevator," Christian commanded, his voice utterly devoid of fear, replaced by the lethal focus of a commander in battle. "The sub-level vault has its own auxiliary power and air filtration. You get inside with Maya and Noah, and you lock the blast doors from within."

"Christian, they have automatic weapons—"

"This is my home, Clara," he said, turning to look at me in the pulsing red emergency lights. For a brief second, his hand cupped the back of my neck, pulling my face up to his, and his lips crashed down on mine in a fierce, possessive, breathtaking kiss that tasted of danger and promises. "Protect our children. I will finish this."

He pushed me into the private elevator, hit the override key, and stepped back into the corridor just as the doors sealed shut.

The elevator dropped swiftly into the bedrock beneath the villa. When the doors slid open, I burst into the secure panic room.

Lev stood near the central command console, monitoring twelve live tactical feeds powered by an independent battery array. In the corner of the reinforced room, Maya sat on a velvet cot, rocking baby Noah in his portable bassinet, whispering softly to him just as she had seen me do.

"Mommy!" Maya cried out, her eyes wide with fear as distant thuds of gunfire vibrated through the reinforced concrete ceiling above.

I ran to them, scooping both children into my arms, pulling Noah out of the bassinet and pressing him tight against my chest while holding Maya close. Noah looked up at me with his wide, curious eyes, completely calm despite the chaos, recognizing my heartbeat.

"Lev, how many are there?" I asked, my voice tight.

"Eight mercenaries," Lev replied, his eyes tracking the red blips on the thermal display. "Marcus hired an elite eastern European private military unit. But they underestimated Mr. Sterling's defensive grid. Christian served four years in the British Special Reconnaissance Regiment before he took over the family conglomerate."

On the thermal monitor, I watched in awe as Christian moved through the darkened estate like a shadow. He didn't just defend; he dismantled the intruders with brutal, terrifying efficiency, using the layout of his ancestral home to ambush the mercenaries one by one.

Within six minutes, six of the thermal signatures were neutralized.

"He's cleared the main foyer," Lev said, letting out a breath. "Only two targets remaining."

Suddenly, a high-pitched electronic whine pierced the panic room’s audio console.

Clank.

The heavy hydraulic locks on the main vault door hissed. The green status light on the electronic keypad blinked red.

"What is that?" I asked, a fresh wave of ice flooding my veins.

Lev swung around, his weapon raised, his eyes wide with shock. "The external override... someone had the biometric administrative master key."

"Victoria," I whispered in horror.

The heavy four-inch steel blast door slowly groaned open.

Standing in the doorway, drenched in rain and wearing a tactical vest over his designer suit, was Marcus Vance. In his hand, he held a military-grade sidearm aimed directly at Lev.

Before Lev could pull the trigger, Marcus fired twice.

Lev collapsed with a grunt, blood blooming across his shoulder as his weapon skittered across the polished floor.

"Hello, Clara," Marcus smiled, his eyes wild with sadistic triumph as he stepped over Lev’s body, pointing the barrel of his smoking gun straight at my heart. "Pack your bags, darling. Family vacation is over."
