Chapter 10 - JUSTICE AT LAST

Within forty-eight hours, the largest corporate scandal in American history was resolved with swift and brutal finality.

Federal prosecutors, armed with the undeniable forensic evidence Julian had compiled and the recorded confessions of Richard's hired mercenaries, dismantled Richard Bennett's entire corrupt syndicate. Over thirty corrupt executives, dirty politicians, and compromised doctors—including the physician who had prescribed Julian's neural poison—were indicted and stripped of their assets.

Richard Bennett was sentenced to three consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole at ADX Florence supermax prison.

The media hailed Julian Bennett as a modern miracle—the titan who had defied medical science, survived an assassination attempt, and reclaimed his rightful throne as CEO of Bennett Enterprises.

One week after the dockyard rescue, the sun broke through the clouds over Chicago, bathing the grand Bennett estate in brilliant golden warmth.

In the sunlit physical therapy pavilion overlooking the gardens, Julian completed his twentieth consecutive unassisted squat. His recovery was nothing short of miraculous; with the neuro-blockers completely flushed from his system and his nerves regenerating rapidly, he walked with only a slight, distinguished limp that improved daily.

"You're overdoing it, Mr. Bennett," I teased, stepping into the pavilion carrying a tray of fresh iced lemonade.

Julian turned, wiping the sweat from his forehead with a towel. A breathtaking, radiant smile lit up his face—a smile devoid of the shadows and grief that had haunted him for twenty years.

"I have to get strong, Clara," he said softly, walking over to me without hesitation. He took the tray from my hands, set it aside, and pulled me into his arms. "I have a lot of lost time to make up for."

I wrapped my arms around his neck, resting my head against his chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart. "Brandon and Emma are having a picnic with Marcus by the koi pond. Brandon hasn't stopped talking about how you took down the bad guys like a superhero."

"Brandon is the real hero," Julian murmured, kissing the top of my head. "He protected his sister. He has his mother's courage."

Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet jewelry box. My breath hitched in my throat as he opened it.

Inside lay two freshly polished silver compass pendants, interlinked together with pure platinum rings, framing a flawless ten-carat sapphire that sparkled like the waters of Blackwood Lake under a summer sky.

"Twenty years ago, a boy made a promise to a girl under the willows," Julian said, his voice deep and thick with boundless love. "He promised that no matter where the storms of life scattered them, his compass would always guide him back to her. Clara Vance... will you marry me, and let me be a father to your children?"

May you like

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy streamed down my cheeks. For the first time in my life, there was no fear, no hunger, and no secrets.

"Yes," I cried, throwing my arms around him as he lifted me off my feet and spun me under the morning sun. "A thousand times, yes!"
