Chapter 4 - A DANGEROUS WHISPER IN THE DARK

By midnight, my world had turned upside down. The five thousand dollars Julian gave me had saved Brandon's life. A private pediatrician had arrived at our crumbling apartment within an hour, administering high-grade antibiotics and IV fluids. By the time Emma fell asleep clutching a full stomach of warm chicken soup, Brandon’s fever had finally broken.

Sitting on the edge of the squeaky mattress, I held the silver compass around my neck—the duplicate of the one Julian wore. Twenty years ago, on the night of the Blackwood fire, Julian had handed me his compass and said, “Run, Clara. No matter what they tell you, never look back.” An hour later, the mansion was engulfed in flames, and the news reported that Julian Vance, heir to the Vance timber fortune, had died alongside his parents.

How had he become Julian Bennett? How had he survived?

The next morning, a sleek black town car arrived outside our dilapidated building. The driver, an imposing man named Marcus with a military posture and a kind smile, loaded our meager belongings into the trunk without a word of judgment.

When we arrived back at the Bennett estate, Marcus didn't take us to the servants' quarters. Instead, he escorted us to the sunlit east wing of the main mansion—a set of grand, luxurious suites overlooking the rose gardens.

"Mr. Bennett requested that you and the children reside here," Marcus said respectfully. "Breakfast has been prepared. When you are settled, Mr. Bennett requires your assistance in the private study."

After settling Brandon and Emma with a mountain of fresh fruit and storybooks, I made my way through the labyrinthine corridors to Julian's study.

The room was vast, lined with towering mahogany bookshelves and floor-to-ceiling windows. Julian was seated behind a massive desk, reviewing stacks of financial ledgers. In the daylight, he looked exhausted. Dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes, and a small glass vial sat beside his coffee cup.

"Close the door, Clara," he said without looking up.

I clicked the heavy door shut and stepped forward. "Thank you for the doctor, Mr. Bennett. Brandon is recovering. I don't know how to repay you."

"You can repay me by telling me the truth," he said, turning his wheelchair to face me directly. He placed the faded photograph from the bathroom onto the desk between us. "Twenty years ago, a girl named Clara Vance vanished after Blackwood Lake burned. Everyone thought she drowned in the storm. But you're standing in front of me."

Tears pricked my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. "And everyone thought Julian Vance burned in that house. How are you alive, Julian? Why are you a Bennett?"

Julian’s face softened, the iron facade crumbling for a fraction of a second. "My mother was a Bennett before she married my father. After the fire... after Richard's father tried to eradicate our branch of the family to seize the empire... I was pulled from the wreckage barely breathing. My maternal grandfather hid me in Switzerland, changed my name, and trained me to take back what was stolen. Five years ago, I returned to claim Bennett Enterprises."

"And your legs?" I choked out.

A bitter smile touched his lips. "Six months ago, Richard realized I had accumulated enough voting shares to oust him permanently. My car brakes were severed on the highway. I survived the crash, but my spine took the damage. The doctors told me I would never walk again."

I stepped closer, my heart aching for the boy I had loved and the broken man he had become. As I approached the desk, my eyes caught the small glass vial next to his coffee.

"What is this medication?" I asked, picking up the amber bottle.

"A nerve relaxant," Julian answered. "Richard’s personal physician prescribes it weekly to manage my muscle spasms."

I opened the cap, sniffing the liquid. My mother had been a head pharmacist for thirty years before the fire, and she had taught me the distinct scents of chemical compounds. A sharp, bitter almond odor hit my nostrils.

"Julian," I whispered, panic rising in my throat. "This isn't a nerve relaxant. It contains high concentrations of synthetic neuro-inhibitors. It’s designed to prevent your damaged nerves from regenerating. Someone is systematically keeping you paralyzed."

Before Julian could grasp the horror of my words, the massive glass window behind his desk shattered into a million glittering shards. A deafening gunshot echoed through the room.
