Chapter 6 - THE ENEMY AT THE GATES

The next morning, war officially began.

Julian threw the poisoned medication down the drain and immediately hired a covert team of loyal medical specialists who set up an underground rehabilitation unit within the estate’s basement vault. Within twenty-four hours of receiving intense neuro-stimulant therapy and spinal decompression, a miracle occurred: Julian felt a sharp, burning tingle in the toes of his left foot.

He didn't celebrate. He channeled the pain into pure discipline.

"We don't reveal this to anyone," Julian instructed Marcus and me. "Richard must believe I am weak, defeated, and ready to be slaughtered at tomorrow's board meeting."

To assist him, Julian appointed me as his temporary executive assistant. For the first time in years, I took off my faded caregiver clothes and put on an elegant charcoal-gray business suit that Julian had ordered for me. When I stepped out into the hallway, Julian paused, his breath catching in his throat as he looked at me.

"You haven't changed at all, Clara," he said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "You still take my breath away."

"We have an empire to save, Mr. Bennett," I replied, blushing furiously while trying to keep my composure. "Flattery won't save you from the board."

At ten o'clock the following morning, Julian's armored convoy arrived at the gleaming seventy-story Bennett Tower in downtown Chicago. Media cameras flashed blinding lights as Marcus wheeled Julian through the grand lobby, with me walking closely beside him carrying a locked leather briefcase.

When we entered the 50th-floor boardroom, the room fell dead silent.

Twenty board members in bespoke suits sat around a massive glass table. At the head of the table sat Richard Bennett, a smug, triumphant grin plastered across his face.

"Julian! What a pleasant surprise," Richard announced theatrically, standing up with open arms. "We were afraid your deteriorating health would prevent you from attending. Gentlemen, as you know, my brother's tragic condition has left him incapable of executing his executive duties. Today, we vote on transferring all executive power to me."

"Sit down, Richard," Julian’s voice rang out, clear, authoritative, and terrifyingly cold.

Richard scoffed. "Julian, let's not make this embarrassing. You can barely sign your own name. Why don't you let your little charity-case nurse wheel you back to your nursery?"

Several board members chuckled nervously, but Julian didn't flinch.

"Clara, the files," Julian commanded quietly.

I opened the briefcase and placed twenty thick dossiers in front of every board member.

"What is this nonsense?" Richard snarled.

"That," Julian said, his eyes locking onto Richard with the precision of a guillotine blade, "is a comprehensive forensic audit of the last five years of Bennett Offshore Holdings. It details forty-seven counts of corporate embezzlement, fifty million dollars funneled into shell accounts in Panama, and direct payments to the mechanic who tampered with my vehicle's braking system six months ago."

The room erupted into shouting. Board members gasped, flipping frantically through the damning bank statements and signed confessions.

Richard’s face drained of all color, turning a sickly shade of gray. "This is fabricated! It’s a lie!"

"The Federal Bureau of Investigation is already waiting in the lobby with an arrest warrant for financial treason," Julian continued smoothly. "Your vote is void, Richard. You are officially terminated."

Richard lunged across the table, knocking over water glasses, his eyes wild with rabid fury. "You think you've won, Julian?! You think you can hide behind your crippled legs and your little tramp?!" He pointed a trembling finger at me, his face twisted in madness. "I know who she is! She’s Clara Vance! And if I go down, I'm taking her and those bastard children down with me!"

Before security could tackle Richard to the floor, he pulled a remote detonator from his pocket and pressed the button.
