Chapter 7 - THE REVELATION OF BLACKWOOD LAKE

A deafening explosion rocked the lower levels of Bennett Tower. The entire skyscraper shuddered violently, emergency klaxons screaming as thick black smoke began pouring through the ventilation shafts. Panic seized the boardroom as executives scrambled toward the emergency stairwells, knocking chairs aside in a stampede of terror.

In the chaos, Richard broke free from the guards, sprinted toward the private executive elevator, and disappeared into the smoke.

"Marcus, get Clara out of here!" Julian roared over the blaring alarms, coughing as the acrid smoke filled the room.

"I'm not leaving you!" I screamed, grabbing the handles of Julian’s wheelchair and pushing with all my strength toward the freight elevator. "We leave together!"

With Marcus clearing a path with drawn weapons, we made it to the reinforced service elevator and plunged down to the underground parking garage. The convoy was waiting, engines roaring. Marcus bundled Julian and me into the armored SUV just as sirens from dozens of police cruisers and fire engines converged on the building.

As the SUV tore through the crowded streets of Chicago toward the safehouse, the adrenaline slowly ebbed, leaving behind a raw, suffocating silence.

Julian reached out and took my trembling hand in his. His grip was warm, strong, and grounding.

"Why didn't you leave me in that room, Clara?" he asked softly, his gray eyes searching mine. "You could have run. You could have saved yourself."

"Twenty years ago, you stayed behind in a burning house so I could escape," I answered, a tear finally escaping and rolling down my cheek. "I spent twenty years thinking the only boy who ever truly loved me had died in agony. I won't lose you again, Julian. Not to Richard. Not to anyone."

Julian pulled me toward him, burying his face in the crook of my neck. I felt a hot drop of moisture against my skin, and I realized the indestructible billionaire was weeping.

"I never stopped looking for you, Clara," he whispered against my skin, his voice breaking. "When I woke up in that Swiss clinic with third-degree burns and broken bones, the only thing that kept me breathing through the skin grafts was the memory of your smile at Blackwood Lake. But when my investigators searched for you, Richard had forged a death certificate claiming you drowned. I thought you were gone forever."

"He destroyed everything," I sobbed, resting my forehead against his. "My father's name, my family's fortune... everything."

"Not everything," Julian said, lifting my chin so our eyes locked. "He didn't destroy you. And he didn't destroy the love we had."

Before I could process the words, Julian leaned in and pressed his lips to mine. It was a kiss born of twenty years of grief, longing, and unbroken devotion. The world outside the armored SUV faded into insignificance as our souls reconnected across the chasm of time.

Suddenly, Marcus’s voice shattered the moment from the front seat. "Boss! We have a major breach at the safehouse!"

May you like

Julian pulled back, his eyes instantly hardening into flint. "What happened?!"

"Richard had a backup strike team," Marcus said, his voice trembling with rare panic. "They overran the safehouse guards ten minutes ago. Boss... they took Brandon and Emma."
