Chapter 9 - The Ghost Speaks
"I'm sorry to disappoint you, Bradley," Brooklyn said, her clear, resonant voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room as she reached the foot of the stage. "I know how desperately you needed me to stay at the bottom of Lake Geneva."
Murmurs and gasps erupted through the crowd like wildfire. Guests stood up from their tables, whispering in shock and pointing at the woman they had believed drowned.
Marlene scrambled to her feet, her voice shrill and panicked. "Security! Get this woman out of here! She’s an imposter! This is an outrage to our family's grief!"
"Nobody moves," an authoritative voice boomed. Winston Marchetti stepped forward, producing his bar card and federal legal credentials. "I am Winston Marchetti, legal counsel representing Mrs. Brooklyn Whitfield. We are here to present new, conclusive evidence regarding the events of October 12th."
With a nod from Winston, the club’s audiovisual technician—who had been subpoenaed earlier that morning—switched the large projector screens from Brooklyn’s memorial portrait to the recovered video feed.
The giant screens flickered to life, showing the high-definition footage recorded by Vivien’s phone on the foggy dock. The entire audience watched in horror as Marlene thrust the $180,000 transfer document at Brooklyn, as Cory blocked her escape, and as Brooklyn slipped into the freezing water.
Then came the audio: the terrifyingly clear recording of Brooklyn’s cries for help, followed by Marlene’s icy order to walk away and let the cold water finish the job, and the visual of Bradley turning his back on his drowning wife.
The ballroom exploded into outrage. Prominent business partners jumped back from the Whitfield table in disgust, while Vivien covered her face, sobbing hysterically.

"You lied to the police, Bradley," Brooklyn said, looking directly into her husband's terrified eyes. "You swore under oath that you couldn't swim to save me. Let's remind everyone of your varsity swimming records at Wisconsin, shall we?"
