Chapter 8 - The Shadow at the Gathering

Inside the banquet hall, the chimes sounded, prompting the hundred-plus attendees to take their seats. Bradley walked slowly up the carpeted steps to the podium, bowing his head in a display of profound sorrow.

"Thank you all for being here today to remember my beloved wife, Brooklyn," Bradley began into the microphone, his voice trembling with well-rehearsed emotion. "She was the light of my life, a gentle soul whose tragic, accidental loss has left an unbearable void in our home."

Marlene sat in the front row, nodding solemnly and clutching her handkerchief as several guests wiped away sympathetic tears.

"When I stood on that dock in the fog," Bradley continued, wiping a fake tear from his cheek, "I prayed to God for the ability to swim out into those freezing waters. But my own physical helplessness condemned me to watch the woman I loved disappear into the dark. In her memory, we are establishing the Whitfield Trust today to ensure that no family ever suffers such tragedy without support..."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the grand hall swung open with a resounding thud.

The sharp sound echoed against the vaulted ceiling, cutting Bradley off mid-sentence. Every head in the room turned toward the entrance.

Through the doorway walked Brooklyn Whitfield, walking with deliberate, steady elegance down the center aisle. Flanking her on either side were Winston Marchetti and three uniformed officers from the State Police Special Investigations Unit.

The entire banquet hall fell into dead silence. Bradley’s jaw dropped, his face draining of all color until he looked like a corpse. Marlene gasped loudly, dropping her champagne flute, which shattered violently on the hardwood floor.

"Brooklyn...?" Bradley stammered through the microphone, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak. "You're... you're dead..."
