Chapter 5 - The Legal Titan

Brooklyn stared at the stranger who had dragged her from the lake. "Who are you? Why do you have these police files already?"
Winston set his reading glasses on the table. "My name is Winston Marchetti. For thirty years, I served as a senior partner specializing in forensic financial litigation and corporate fraud. I retired to Lake Geneva three years ago, but I still retain full access to federal investigative networks and county legal resources."
He explained that while she had been recovering under medical sedation, he had quietly instructed his private investigators to look into the Whitfield family and their sudden financial distress.
"Bradley’s company isn’t failing because of a bad economy, Brooklyn," Winston explained, sliding a second set of financial spreadsheets toward her. "For the past eighteen months, Bradley, Cory, and their mother have been funneling company assets into unauthorized offshore crypto accounts, racking up over half a million dollars in high-interest private debts. They were days away from facing criminal embezzlement charges unless they injected immediate liquid capital into their corporate accounts."
Brooklyn felt a cold realization wash over her. "That’s why they wanted my $180,000. It was the exact amount they needed to delay the audit."
"And when you refused to sign the transfer on that dock," Winston continued grimly, "they realized that if you were declared legally deceased or missing at sea, Bradley—as your surviving spouse—would automatically inherit your entire estate, including your father's payout and all your bank balances, through probate."
Winston leaned forward, his dark eyes fierce with determination. "They left you at the bottom of that lake because your death was worth more to them than your life. But they don't know you survived. As far as the Whitfields, the police, and the public are concerned, Brooklyn Whitfield is a lost body in the lake."
Brooklyn clutched the sheets, her sorrow hardening into a sharp, unbreakable resolve. "What do we do now?"
May you like
Winston allowed a thin, razor-sharp smile to touch his face. "Now, Brooklyn, we let them dig their own graves."
