Chapter 3 - The Hand in the Abyss

The freezing lake water seeped into Brooklyn’s clothes, pulling her under again and again. Her throat burned with swallowed water, and her limbs grew so numb she could no longer feel her fingertips. The heavy canvas of her apron held her legs together in a death grip. Her desperate screams became weak, bubbling gasps. Above her, the surface of the lake reflected only the indifferent gray of the morning sky. As darkness began creeping across the edges of her vision, her strength gave out completely, and she slipped beneath the water into the cold, silent deep.

Several hundred yards across the misty cove, Winston Marchetti was finishing his daily open-water endurance swim. A disciplined man of fifty-five with the broad shoulders of a former collegiate athlete, he was accustomed to the lake’s eerie quiet. But as he paused between strokes, a faint, desperate cry tore through the fog.

Winston stopped immediately, treading water and listening intently. A second cry echoed across the bay—weaker, choked with panic—before abrupt, terrifying silence settled over the lake.

Without hesitation, Winston turned and surged through the water with powerful freestyle strokes toward the private dock. When he arrived, the surface was undisturbed, with only slight ripples expanding near the wooden pilings.

Taking a deep breath, Winston dove down into the frigid gloom. On his first dive, the murky water yielded nothing. He surfaced, gasped for oxygen, and plunged down a second time, sweeping his arms blindly along the weeds. Nothing.

Surfacing again to orient himself with the dock’s edge, he took one last deep breath and forced himself deeper, down toward the bottom silt where the sunlight barely penetrated. His outstretched fingers brushed against coarse fabric. He lunged forward, grabbing the strap of the black apron, and kicked upward with all his remaining strength.

Breaking the surface, Winston hauled Brooklyn onto the low swim deck of his own boat house on the opposite shore. She was pale, blue-lipped, and unresponsive. Winston knelt over her instantly, clearing her airway and performing rhythmic CPR compressions.

"Stay with me," he demanded, his voice steady, commanding her heart to beat. "Breathe!"

After three agonizing cycles, Brooklyn coughed violently, expelling water and gasping for air. Her eyelids fluttered open, catching a blurry glimpse of a stern, focused face looking down at her.

"My... my husband..." she whispered before consciousness slipped away again.

Winston wrapped her in thick thermal blankets and lifted her into his arms. "You’re safe now. Keep your eyes on me."
