Chapter 7 - BETRAYAL IN THE BLOOD

Luca didn't blink. The silence that followed Petrov’s revelation was more suffocating than the gunsmoke hanging thick in the air.

"Carmela," Luca repeated, the word barely a breath, cold enough to freeze marrow.

Petrov laughed, a wet, rattling sound. "She knew you'd bring ruin on the family for that little nurse. She made a deal with me two hours ago. My men eliminate you, she takes the syndicate seat, and Daniel gets his cut of the ledger. You were dead the moment you walked into that mall, Santoro."

Luca lowered the rifle slowly. His eyes drifted to the dark corridor leading to the private wing of the mansion.

There, standing in the shadows of the hallway, clutching a small leather suitcase, was Carmela Santoro. Her face was deathly pale, stripped of all aristocratic arrogance. She had heard the gunfire cease, expecting Petrov’s men to call her down. Instead, she found her nephew standing amidst the carnage, alive and untouched.

"Luca..." Carmela whispered, her voice cracking as she took a trembling step backward. "You don't understand the pressures... the families were revolting..."

"Marco," Luca said without looking back.

"Yes, Boss?"

"Secure Petrov in the basement holding cell. Have the doctor patch his shoulder. I want him alive until the consortium signs over his port assets."

"Understood." Marco motioned to two guards, who dragged the groaning Russian mobster away.

Luca then turned his attention to the trembling form beneath the sofa. He reached down with one massive hand, gripped Daniel Vance by the scruff of his jacket, and dragged him out into the open like a dead rodent.

"No! Please! Luca, man, we were in high school together! Don't do this!" Daniel babbled, tears and saliva coating his chin as his boots scrambled uselessly for purchase on the slippery marble. "It was Carmela’s idea! She contacted me through the bookie! She said if I gave up Vanessa’s location, they’d pay my debts!"

Luca looked at Daniel with pure disgust. "You sold your daughter's life to buy your own."

"She’s not even yours!" Daniel screamed in desperation. "Why do you care? She’s my kid!"

"A father protects," Luca said, his voice dropping into a register of icy finality. "You are not a father. You are a disease. Ray, take him to the docks. Put him on a cargo vessel bound for the Siberian straits. If he ever sets foot on American soil again, feed him to the harbor."

"No! Vanessa! Help me!" Daniel shrieked as Ray and two enforcers dragged him backward out into the snowy night, his pathetic cries fading into the howling blizzard.

Luca watched them go, his expression stony. Then, he turned to Carmela.

The matriarch fell to her knees on the marble floor, her expensive pearls scattering across the bloodstained tiles. "Luca... I am your father's sister! You cannot kill me! The Santoro blood—"

"The Santoro blood gave you luxury, power, and protection," Luca said, walking toward her, his heavy steps echoing with doom. "And you traded it for fear. You invited armed butchers into my house while an innocent child slept upstairs. You broke the only law that matters."

"Please..." she sobbed, clutching at his polished boots. "Exile me. Send me to Sicily. I will never return."

Luca stared down at his aunt. For a moment, the ghost of the battered, unloved boy he had once been flickered in his eyes. Carmela had stood by and watched his father beat him as a teenager. She had sneered at his bruises, telling him that weakness was a crime. She had never shown him love. But she was blood.

"You will leave this estate tonight," Luca said softly, his voice cutting deeper than any bullet. "You will surrender your shares, your accounts, and your name. If you speak to any member of the syndicate, if you are seen east of the Mississippi, you will be executed on sight. Marco has your car waiting. Get out."

Carmela didn't wait for him to change his mind. She scrambled to her feet, clutching her coat, and fled out the side exit into the freezing night, stripped of everything she had ever valued.

Luca stood alone in the grand foyer for a long moment, the adrenaline slowly draining from his veins, leaving behind a profound, aching exhaustion. He looked down at his blood-spattered shirt.

He couldn't let Lily see him like this.

He stripped off the tactical harness, shed the ruined dress shirt, and used a clean linen towel from the credenza to wipe the soot and blood from his chest and arms. He pulled on a clean black woolen sweater brought to him by a shaken but loyal footman.

Only then did he walk slowly up the sweeping staircase, down the quiet east corridor, and stop before the reinforced door of the panic room.

He pressed the intercom button. "Vanessa. It’s over. It’s safe."

The hydraulic locks disengaged with a heavy thud. The steel door slid back.

Vanessa stood in the doorway, pale and trembling, her eyes wide with terror. When she saw Luca standing there—alive, breathing, and whole—she let out a ragged, broken gasp.

Before she could think, before her rational mind could remind her of who he was and what he represented, Vanessa threw herself into his arms.
