Chapter 6 - MIDNIGHT UNDER SIEGE

The blare of the tactical alarm ripped through the tranquil master suite, turning the sanctuary into a battle zone in a fraction of a second.

Lily bolted upright in the massive bed, screaming in terror as the steel shutters groaned shut, locking out the moonlight and plunging the room into flashing red emergency lights.

"Mommy! Mommy!"

Vanessa lunged for the bed, wrapping her arms around her hysterical daughter, her own pulse hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "I’m here, baby! I’m right here!"

Luca didn't waste a heartbeat. He moved to the bedside table, entered a six-digit code into a concealed panel on the wall, and the oak wainscoting slid back to reveal a reinforced panic closet equipped with an independent air supply and ballistic armor plating.

"Inside," Luca commanded, his voice dead-calm, cutting through the blaring klaxons. "Both of you. Now."

"Luca, what's happening?" Vanessa cried, pulling Lily toward the opening.

"Petrov used Daniel's old security clearance from his days working for the city's infrastructure grid to cut the power grid to the north sector," Luca explained rapidly, pulling a tactical combat harness from the closet and buckling it over his chest with practiced muscle memory. "They breached the outer courtyard. They think they can blitz the house before my backup arrives from the city."

"Don't go out there!" Vanessa pleaded, her hand shooting out to grab his sleeve. She saw the lethal, chilling detachment settling over his features—the face of a man who was about to kill. "They have heavy weapons! You'll be murdered!"

Luca paused. He looked down at her small, trembling hand gripping his forearm. Then he leaned down, placed a firm, burning kiss on her forehead, and stared deeply into her eyes.

"This house is my domain, Vanessa. The only people who will die tonight are the ones foolish enough to enter it uninvited." He looked past her to Lily, who was sobbing into her mother's sweater. "Lily. Remember your Christmas wish?"

Lily nodded weakly, trembling from head to toe.

"A strong daddy keeps his promises," Luca said softly. "Close this door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except my voice. Marco will be right outside the wall."

He stepped back and hit the master override button. The heavy steel door of the panic room slid shut with a pneumatic hiss, sealing Vanessa and Lily inside total, soundproof darkness save for the dim green glow of emergency LED strips along the floor.

Outside, the mansion erupted into gunfire.

Luca walked into the corridor, racking the slide of an assault rifle he had retrieved from the armory locker. Marco was already in position at the top of the sweeping marble staircase, firing disciplined, three-round bursts down into the grand foyer.

Below, the heavy mahogany double doors had been blown off their hinges by explosive breaching charges. Glass from the crystal chandelier rained down onto the polished hardwood. Half a dozen men in tactical gear and ski masks were advancing, laying down covering fire while another man barked orders in Russian.

Behind them, cowering behind a marble pillar in the foyer, was Daniel Vance.

"Where is she, Vance?" a booming voice demanded. Viktor Petrov stepped through the ruined doorway, a massive Russian bear of a man with a graying beard and cold, dead eyes. He held a gold-plated submachine gun. "You said the safe was on the ground floor!"

"It’s upstairs! The master suite!" Daniel shrieked, pointing a trembling finger upward toward where Luca stood. "The woman is up there! Give me my cut, Petrov! You promised five million once the ledger is secured!"

"You'll get your payment when I have the drive, rat," Petrov growled.

Above them, Luca stepped out into plain view on the mezzanine balcony. He didn't take cover. He stood fully erect, an imposing silhouette framed by the flickering emergency lights.

"Petrov," Luca’s voice echoed through the ruined hall like thunder.

Every gun in the foyer instantly swiveled upward. Petrov’s eyes widened slightly, a sneer curling his lip. "Santoro! Look at you, defending another man’s family. You've gone soft for a pair of brown eyes."

"You breached my home," Luca said, his voice utterly devoid of emotion. "You brought violence into the room where an innocent child was sleeping."

"I came for what belongs to me!" Petrov yelled, raising his weapon. "Kill him!"

A hail of bullets tore into the balcony railing, chewing through the ornate marble balusters. But Luca was already moving. He vaulted the railing, dropping ten feet to the middle landing of the grand staircase, firing in mid-air with surgical precision.

Two Russian mercenaries dropped before they could readjust their aim. Luca hit the stairs, rolled, and came up behind a heavy bronze statue, returning fire. Marco provided covering fire from above, dropping a third assailant who was attempting to flank from the dining room.

Daniel screamed as drywall and splinters exploded around him. He turned to flee back out the front entrance, but the door was suddenly blocked.

Ray and four heavily armed Santoro enforcers strode in from the rear terrace, flanking the invaders in a deadly crossfire. The battle was short, brutal, and utterly decisive. Within three minutes, the gunfire ceased.

The grand foyer was quiet again, save for the crackle of a small fire in the curtains and the groans of the wounded. Five of Petrov’s men lay dead on the floor.

Petrov himself was on his knees, shot through the shoulder, his gold weapon lying several feet away in a puddle of water from the fire sprinklers.

Daniel was curled into a fetal ball beneath a sofa, weeping hysterically.

Luca walked slowly down the remaining steps, his boots crunching over shattered crystal and spent brass casings. His white shirt was stained with soot and blood, but he was untouched. He stopped in front of Petrov, pressing the smoking barrel of his rifle against the Russian Don’s forehead.

"You lose, Viktor," Luca said quietly.

"Do you think... this ends with me?" Petrov spat blood onto the floor. "Carmela made the call, Santoro. Your own blood sold you out. She gave Daniel the perimeter codes. You’re fighting a war on two fronts... and your own house wants you dead."
