Chapter 4 - THE FORTRESS IN THE SNOW

"Luca, stop!"
Vanessa’s scream echoed down the concrete corridor, sharp with raw, desperate humanity.
Luca’s blade hovered less than an inch from Daniel’s shaking, splayed fingers. Daniel was whimpering, pressing himself backward into the filthy brickwork of the loading dock, tears and snot smearing across his pallid face.
Luca did not move for several agonizing seconds. His muscles were corded steel, his breathing controlled and shallow. The darkness inside him was palpable—a suffocating aura that promised unyielding retribution. Then, slowly, the blade retracted. The pocket knife vanished into his pocket with a crisp click.
"Consider that your only mercy," Luca whispered to Daniel, his voice freezing the air between them. "If I ever see your face again, if you breathe the air within ten miles of her, there will be nowhere on this earth deep enough for you to hide."
Luca turned his back on the pathetic man as if he were nothing more than discarded garbage. He walked back up the stairs toward Vanessa. Lily was peeking out from behind Marco’s broad frame, her eyes round with wonder and fright, her hands still pressed against her ears.
"The underground bay is compromised," Marco reported, stepping forward. "Backup is arriving at the north garage. The armored Maybach is idling."
"Let's move," Luca commanded. He didn't ask for permission. He swept Lily into his arms once more, took Vanessa by the elbow with an iron yet gentle grip, and led them through a side security door that spilled out into an icy subterranean parking lot.
A matte-black Maybach with reinforced plating and blacked-out ballistic glass sat waiting, its engine purring like a quiet predator. A driver in a suit threw open the heavy rear doors.
"Get in," Luca said to Vanessa.
"Luca, I can't just get into a car with you," she protested, her teeth chattering from the sub-zero draft and sheer shock. "I have my job. I have an apartment. Lily's school—"
"Your apartment is already being watched by Petrov’s men," Luca cut in, his eyes unwavering. "Your hospital shifts are canceled; I bought out your contract ten minutes after I found you. You have nowhere safe in this city except where I put you. Now get in before another sniper takes a shot at my window."
The cold reality of her situation hit her like a physical blow. She had no money, no allies, and a criminal syndicate was hunting her daughter for codes she didn't even understand. Swallowing her pride, Vanessa climbed into the luxurious, heated interior of the vehicle, pulling Lily into her lap.
Luca slid in beside them, the heavy door thudding shut with the finality of a bank vault. The driver hit the gas, and the armored vehicle surged forward into the blinding December blizzard.
Inside the car, the silence was thick. The air smelled of expensive Italian leather and cedarwood. Warm air poured from the vents, thawing Vanessa’s frozen fingers.
Lily looked around the lavish cabin, her eyes widening at the starlight roof lining and the glowing digital screens. She looked up at Luca. "Are you a prince?"
A faint, genuine smile softened Luca’s harsh features. It transformed him, for a fleeting second, back into the boy Vanessa had known—vulnerable, beautiful, human.
"No, Lily," Luca murmured. "I’m not a prince."
"Are you the Daddy Santa promised?" she asked innocently.
Vanessa gasped, reaching to cover Lily’s mouth. "Lily, stop! You don't ask people that!"
Luca gently caught Vanessa’s wrist. His touch sent a strange, electric shiver through her veins, a reminder of the quiet tension that had existed between them when they were teenagers, unspoken and terrifyingly potent.
"Let her speak, Vanessa," Luca said. He looked down at the five-year-old. "I promised to make sure you have food, and that no one hurts you. Does that sound like a good start?"
Lily nodded eagerly, curling her small body against Vanessa's side. Within minutes, exhausted by the terror and the warmth of the car, the little girl’s eyelids fluttered shut, and she fell into a deep, rhythmic sleep.
Vanessa looked out the window as the cityscape blurred into rolling hills of pine trees covered in heavy white snow. They were heading north, into the secluded ridge estates where the city’s true power players lived.
"What codes was Daniel talking about, Luca?" Vanessa asked quietly, her voice trembling. "My father was an accountant. He died five years ago. He left me nothing but an old watch and some sentimental letters."
Luca’s expression hardened. "Your father wasn't an ordinary accountant, Vanessa. He was the head auditor for the East Coast Consortium twenty years ago. Before he died, he created a decentralized ledger containing the banking routes and offshore assets of the Petrov family. Viktor Petrov has been looking for that ledger for half a decade. Daniel must have discovered old documents in your files and offered to deliver you in exchange for wiping his debts."
Vanessa buried her face in her hands, horrified. "He traded us. He literally traded his own daughter's life for poker chips."
"He will answer for that," Luca said, his voice dropping into dangerous gravel. "I will handle Daniel. But right now, your only job is to survive."
The car turned through massive wrought-iron gates flanked by private armed security checkpoints. Ahead loomed a sprawling, modern stone manor perched on the edge of a snow-draped cliff—Santoro Manor. It was a fortress of glass, steel, and stone, glowing warmly against the brutal winter storm.
The car stopped under a heated portico. Luca stepped out first, offering his hand to Vanessa.
She took it, stepping into the crisp mountain air. But before they could take three steps toward the double mahogany doors, the heavy oak entrance swung open.

Standing on the threshold was a tall, elegant woman in an emerald silk dress, her silver-streaked hair swept up into an immaculate chignon. Her eyes, sharp and predatory like an eagle’s, narrowed as she looked at Vanessa and the child.
"So," the woman said, her voice dripping with aristocratic venom. "You abandoned an international syndicate meeting to play savior to a beggar girl and her bastard. Have you lost your mind, Luca?"
