Chapter 3 - GLASS AND SHADOWS

The world erupted into instantaneous bedlam. Screams tore through the shopping center as shoppers trampled over holiday displays, abandoning strollers and packages in a desperate stampede for the exits.

Vanessa’s maternal instinct was instantaneous. She threw herself over Lily, hitting the hard marble floor, preparing to shield her daughter's frail body with her own.

She never hit the cold stone.

A massive arm wrapped around her waist, sweeping her off her feet effortlessly, while another gloved hand securely scooped Lily against a broad, bulletproof chest. Luca didn't hesitate for a microsecond. In one fluid motion, he pulled both mother and child into the sheltered alcove behind Santa’s velvet-draped throne, using his own body as an impenetrable shield.

"Down. Stay against the wall," Luca commanded. The warmth he had shown Lily was gone, replaced by the chilling, algorithmic calm of a man who lived in the theater of violence.

"Mommy!" Lily shrieked, clutching Luca's lapels, burying her face into his coat.

"I’ve got you, little bird," Luca murmured, his voice steadying the girl with astonishing effectiveness. "Keep your eyes on Mommy."

Two loud thuds echoed as Luca’s personal guards, Marco and Ray, slid into the alcove, their weapons drawn—sleek, suppressed Sig Sauer pistols.

"Three shooters on the mezzanine, boss," Marco reported crisply, breathing evenly despite the gunfire above. "Eastern European accents. Wearing civilian jackets over combat vests. It’s Viktor Petrov’s cleanup crew."

"And Daniel?" Luca asked, his voice deathly quiet.

"Spotted on security cameras outside the south entrance. He pointed them toward the photo line."

Vanessa felt sick. Daniel had sold them out. He hadn’t just tracked them down; he had pointed armed assassins directly at his own child to save his own miserable skin. A dry sob choked in her throat.

"Marco," Luca said coldly, unbuttoning his topcoat. He slipped off the heavy cashmere garment and wrapped it securely around Vanessa and Lily, enveloping them in his scent and warmth. Beneath it, he wore a tailored charcoal vest, a white shirt, and a custom leather shoulder rig holding a matte-black firearm. "Clear the service corridor to the underground bay. Ray, cover the flank."

"Yes, Mr. Santoro."

A volley of bullets chewed through the plastic candy canes and fake snowdrifts of Santa’s Village just inches from their hiding spot. The scent of ozone and plaster dust filled the air.

"Vanessa," Luca said, grabbing her face gently with his bare hand. His palm was warm, his thumb resting firmly against her cheekbone. "Look at me."

She looked. His dark eyes were pools of absolute stillness amidst the roaring chaos.

"I am going to get you and Lily out of here," he said, holding her gaze with hypnotic certainty. "Do you trust me?"

"I... I don't know you anymore!" she cried, the truth tumbling out.

"You know me," he said firmly. "I am still the boy you protected. And now it’s my turn. Take my hand, and do not let go."

Luca turned, raised his firearm, and leaned around the corner. He fired three rapid, precisely timed shots. Above, two sickening thuds hit the balcony floor, followed by the clatter of dropped rifles. There was no hesitation, no wasted motion. Luca Santoro was a machine designed for lethal efficiency.

"Move," he commanded.

Ray and Marco surged ahead, forming a human wedge. Luca kept his left arm locked tightly around Vanessa, carrying Lily perched on his right hip as if the child weighed nothing at all. They moved with terrifying speed through the panicked throng of shoppers, cutting left through an unmarked emergency exit marked EMPLOYEES ONLY.

The heavy metal door slammed shut behind them, muffling the chaotic screams of the mall. They descended a concrete staircase into the subterranean service level, where fluorescent lights buzzed overhead.

Suddenly, the fire door at the base of the stairs burst open.

A man stepped through, wielding a tactical shotgun. He was scarred, stocky, with a crude tattoo of a Russian double eagle on his throat. Behind him, standing in the shadows of the loading dock, was a disheveled figure in a greasy brown leather jacket.

"Daniel," Vanessa gasped, freezing on the steps.

Her ex-husband looked haggard, his eyes bloodshot and twitching from adrenaline or stimulants. When his eyes landed on Vanessa, a vile, triumphant sneer spread across his face.

"Found you, you ungrateful bitch," Daniel sneered, though his eyes darted nervously toward Luca. "Thought you could run? Thought you could take my kid and hide in some filthy shelter?"

"Shut your mouth, Daniel," Vanessa cried, terror tightening her throat as she saw the Russian cock the shotgun. "Lily is here!"

"I don't give a damn!" Daniel yelled. "Petrov wants the codes your father left in your trust fund! Give them to me, and maybe they let you live!"

Before Daniel could finish his sentence, Luca stepped smoothly in front of Vanessa and Lily. He handed the little girl to Marco behind him.

"Cover her ears," Luca instructed softly.

Luca walked down the remaining concrete steps, completely unbothered by the 12-gauge shotgun pointed directly at his chest. His posture was leisurely, terrifyingly casual.

"Who the hell are you?" Daniel snarled, stepping behind the Russian gunman. "Shoot him, Yuri! Blow him in half!"

The Russian gunman took one look at the signet ring on Luca's hand, took another look at his face, and his cocky sneer evaporated into pure, unadulterated horror.

"Santoro..." the Russian whispered, his weapon trembling. "You are not supposed to be here."

"You came into my city," Luca said, his voice dropping into a register that made the concrete walls seem to vibrate. "You fired weapons near my woman. And you aimed a gun at a child under my protection."

"Wait—she’s not your woman, she’s my wife!" Daniel shrieked.

Luca closed the distance between himself and the Russian in the blink of an eye. Before the gunman could squeeze the trigger, Luca’s hand clamped down over the shotgun’s barrel, forcing it upward as a thunderous blast blew a crater into the concrete ceiling. In the next breath, Luca drove the heel of his palm into the Russian’s throat with sickening force. The man dropped like a stone, gagging for air, neutralized in a fraction of a second.

Luca didn't even breathe heavily. He stepped over the writhing assassin and fixed his predatory gaze directly on Daniel Vance.

Daniel stumbled backward, falling onto the dirty floor of the loading dock, wetting himself in terror. "Stay back! Stay the hell away from me!"

Luca stopped three inches from Daniel’s trembling boots. He slowly reached behind his back, retrieved a pearl-handled pocket knife—the exact knife Vanessa had given him for his seventeenth birthday—and flicked it open.

"Fifteen years ago," Luca murmured, staring down at Daniel, "I swore that if anyone ever made Vanessa cry again, I would take their hands. Let's see which one you value less."
