Chapter 10 - A PROMISE FULFILLED

Christmas morning arrived with a quiet, holy stillness.

A fresh blanket of powder snow covered the sprawling lawns of Santoro Manor, glowing pink and gold under the dawn sky. Inside the great hall, the massive eighteen-foot pine tree was illuminated by thousands of warm fairy lights, reflecting off silver tinsel and hand-blown glass ornaments.

Beneath the tree lay a mountain of wrapped boxes—dolls, books, warm winter coats, art supplies, and an enormous wooden dollhouse with miniature working lamps.

Lily stood at the top of the stairs, wearing new flannel pajamas with little reindeer printed on them. Her eyes were as wide as saucers as she stared down at the wonderland below.

"Mommy..." she whispered, tugging at Vanessa’s hand. "Did Santa find us all the way up here?"

Vanessa, dressed in a soft cream-colored sweater and jeans, smiled down at her daughter, her heart overflowing with a joy she hadn't felt since she was a child herself. "He found us, sweetie. Go look."

Lily let out a squeal of pure, unadulterated joy and bounded down the stairs, sliding across the polished floor in her woolen socks, throwing herself into the sea of presents.

Luca was already standing by the grand fireplace, dressed in a comfortable dark cashmere sweater and trousers, holding a steaming mug of black coffee. He looked relaxed, the lethal tension that had once defined every line of his body completely erased. On his wrist, replacing the heavy gold syndicate band, was the old, polished Hamilton watch that had belonged to Vanessa's father.

Lily tore into a box containing a plush white bear three times her size, burying her face into its fur. "It’s so soft! Look, Mommy! Look, Mr. Luca!"

"It’s beautiful, baby," Vanessa said, walking over to stand beside Luca near the roaring hearth.

Luca wrapped his arm around Vanessa’s shoulders, pulling her naturally into his side. She rested her head against his bicep, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart.

"You went overboard," she teased gently, gesturing to the dozens of presents. "She's five. She would have been happy with a single coloring book."

"A coloring book was what that pathetic mall Santa offered her when she asked for a miracle," Luca murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "No child under my roof will ever settle for scraps again."

Lily suddenly stopped unwrapping a box of paints. She stood up, her little hands dusted with glitter, and walked over to where they were standing. She looked up at Luca with serious, searching eyes.

"What is it, little bird?" Luca asked, kneeling down so they were eye to eye.

"You got me toys," Lily said softly. "And Mommy has a pretty sweater. And we had pancakes for breakfast with real syrup."

"Did you like the pancakes?"

"They were the best in the whole world," Lily said. She paused, twisting the hem of her pajama top in her small fingers. "But... what about my big wish?"

Vanessa’s heart skipped a beat. She held her breath, looking at Luca.

Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet jeweler's box. He didn't open it for Lily; he turned, looking up at Vanessa from his kneeling position.

The room fell completely silent, save for the crackling of pine logs in the fireplace.

"Fifteen years ago, Vanessa," Luca said, his voice resonant, deep, and steady as the mountains surrounding them, "I was a boy with no future, no family, and no hope. You gave me half a sandwich and told me I was worth defending. I promised myself I would spend the rest of my life becoming a man worthy of that kindness."

He flipped open the velvet box.

Inside sat a flawless, cushion-cut five-carat diamond ring, set in platinum and flanked by two small, brilliant sapphires—the exact color of Vanessa’s eyes.

Vanessa pressed both hands to her mouth, tears instantly spilling down her cheeks.

"I have closed the syndicate," Luca continued, his eyes shining with unmasked vulnerability. "The port operations are legitimate. Petrov is in federal custody. Daniel is gone, and he will never return. There are no more shadows chasing you. There is only me. A man who loves you more than life itself, and who wants nothing more than to protect you, cherish you, and provide for you until my last breath."

He turned his gaze to Lily, taking the little girl’s tiny hand in his massive palm.

"Lily Vance," Luca said softly. "I cannot be Santa Claus. But if you and your mother will have me... I promise to be the strongest, best Daddy in the world. Every single day. For the rest of your life."

Lily looked at the ring, then looked at her mother. "Mommy? Can he stay?"

Vanessa dropped to her knees beside Luca, wrapping her arms around his neck, pulling him into an embrace that sealed their fates together forever.

"Yes," Vanessa whispered through her happy tears, her lips brushing against his cheek. "Yes, Luca. A thousand times yes."

May you like

Lily cheered, throwing her arms around both of them, burying herself between their chests. Luca wrapped his enormous arms around both mother and daughter, lifting them both into his embrace, holding the two people who had given him a soul.

Outside the tall frosted windows, church bells began to chime across the snowy valley, heralding the birth of a new morning, a new Christmas, and a new life where fear was finally, permanently forgotten.
