Chapter 9 - The Matriarch's Arrival

At 7:50 AM, the glass revolving doors spun again.

Margaret Whitmore marched into the lobby of Whitmore Logistics, looking like a queen inspecting her subjects. She wore a full-length mink coat, oversized black sunglasses, and carried a leather Hermes Birkin bag. She had come to ensure that Ethan Carter’s desk had been emptied and that her son had adequately punished the compliance department for the previous night's embarrassment.

She strode toward the VIP turnstile, tapping her golden guest badge against the sensor.

Nothing happened.

“What is the meaning of this?” Margaret snapped, rapping her long acrylic nails against the glass partition. “Harrison! Open this barrier this instant!”

Harrison did not move. Instead, the door to Conference Room A opened, and Ellen Price stepped out into the lobby, flanked by the two plainclothes Chicago Police detectives.

“Good morning, Margaret,” Ellen said, her voice echoing across the silent lobby where over one hundred employees were now watching.

Margaret pulled down her sunglasses, her lip curling in disgust. “Ellen? Why are you standing in the lobby with security guards? And why isn't my badge working? Tell these fools to let me through to Daniel’s office.”

“Daniel is currently inside Conference Room A,” Ellen said evenly. “And he won’t be going up to his office today. Or ever again.”

Margaret let out a sharp, aristocratic laugh. “Are you insane? My family founded this logistics firm! My son runs this company!”

“Your son has just been unanimously stripped of all executive authority by the Board of Directors,” Ellen replied, stepping aside to reveal the two detectives. “And these gentlemen are here for you.”

Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling his badge and a set of steel handcuffs from beneath his jacket.

“Margaret Whitmore?” Miller asked.

Margaret recoiled as if stung by an insect. “Don’t you dare step toward me! Do you know who my lawyers are?”

“You are under arrest for simple battery and disorderly conduct under Illinois Criminal Code Section 12-3,” Detective Miller announced clearly. “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

Before the stunned gaze of the entire Whitmore Logistics workforce, the detective turned Margaret around, pulled her mink-sleeved wrists behind her back, and clicked the cold steel handcuffs around her wrists.

“Daniel!” Margaret shrieked, her voice echoing hysterically across the marble floor. “Daniel! Get out here! Fix this!”

Inside the conference room, Daniel Whitmore sat slumped in his chair, his head resting against the mahogany table, utterly powerless to stop the machine he had spent years corrupting.
