Chapter 5 - 7:14 AM at Headquarters

The morning sun rose over Lake Michigan, casting long, sharp shadows across the glass facade of the Whitmore Logistics corporate headquarters at 300 North LaSalle.

By 7:00 AM, the first waves of logistics coordinators, dispatch managers, and financial analysts were trickling through the revolving glass doors of the lobby. Snow was falling lightly over the Chicago riverwalk, but inside the marble lobby, the air felt strangely tense.

At 7:12 AM, Daniel Whitmore’s black Cadillac Escalade pulled up to the executive drop-off curb. Daniel stepped out, wearing a cashmere overcoat, his expression smug and unbothered. Behind him, arriving in an Uber, was Melissa Grant, clutching her leather portfolio and looking visibly relieved that the previous night’s unpleasantness had ended with Carter’s swift dismissal.

“Good morning, Daniel,” Melissa said as they walked together toward the VIP turnstiles. “I’ve already drafted the severance separation for Carter under ‘gross insubordination.’ We’ll have him sign a non-disparagement agreement before he can collect his remaining PTO.”

“Make sure his access is completely wiped by nine,” Daniel said dismissively. “People need to remember who owns this company.”

At 7:14 AM, Daniel tapped his executive keycard against the biometric reader at Turnstile 1.

BEEP-BEEP.

A harsh red strobe flashed on the glass barrier. The screen displayed a stark error message: ACCESS REVOKED – CONTACT BUILDING COMPLIANCE.

Daniel frowned, tapping the card again with force. “What is wrong with this machine?”

Melissa tried her card on Turnstile 2.

*BEEP-BEEP.* ACCESS REVOKED.

Around them, other employees were passing through the standard lanes without issue. Soon, a crowd of over eighty employees had backed up in the lobby, watching their CEO and VP of HR stand stranded at the gates.

Daniel’s face flushed with anger. “Security! Harrison, get over here and open these gates!”

Harrison, the head of building security, stepped out of the control room. He did not have his usual deferential posture. Instead, his expression was rigid, his hands clasped behind his back.

“I can’t do that, Mr. Whitmore,” Harrison said flatly.

“What the hell do you mean you can’t?” Daniel roared, his voice bouncing off the high marble ceilings. “I am the Chief Executive Officer! Open this gate right now or you’re fired on the spot!”

“My orders do not come from you this morning, sir,” Harrison replied calmly. “By order of the Board of Directors, your badges have been deactivated. Furthermore, you are requested in Conference Room A on the ground floor immediately.”

Daniel stepped through the manual visitor gate that security held open, his fists clenched, Melissa trailing behind him in absolute terror.

Across every executive-floor elevator bank, printed notices had been taped at eye level:
