Chapter 7 - The Interrogation of Daniel Whitmore

The lights in Conference Room A dimmed automatically as the large screen flickered to life.
The first slide did not show financial numbers; it showed the high-definition surveillance feed from Morton’s.
In agonizing clarity, the video played at full speed, then at half speed. The entire room watched Margaret Whitmore strike Ethan across the face with explosive venom. The room’s high-end audio system broadcast Daniel’s exact words with crystalline fidelity: “Apologize to her right now in front of everyone, or you are done. Your career at Whitmore Logistics is finished before midnight.”
Daniel’s throat went dry. He swallowed hard, his arrogant composure beginning to crack around the edges. “She was startled. I was... I was defending my elderly mother.”
“Your mother committed battery on camera, Daniel,” Ellen Price said coldly. “The Chicago Police Department has already received the formal criminal complaint. But that is merely the catalyst. Let’s discuss Apex Freight Solutions.”
The screen switched. A vast flowchart populated the display, tracing hundreds of thousands of dollars moving in automated bi-weekly tranches.
The Deloitte lead forensic auditor leaned toward the microphone. “Over the past eighteen months, Mr. Whitmore, you personally signed off on thirty-two manual overrides totaling $14,240,000 to Apex Freight Solutions. Apex has no employees, no trucks, and no operating authority with the Department of Transportation. Its sole registered account holder is Bradley Thornton, your brother-in-law.”
The auditor clicked to the next slide.
“Within forty-eight hours of each wire clearance, thirty percent of those funds were re-routed into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands registered under the name The Margaret Whitmore Revocable Trust, which paid for your mother’s Aspen chalet renovations, her private jet charters, and the very jewelry she wore around her neck last night.”
Daniel gripped the back of a leather chair until his knuckles turned chalk-white. “Those were legitimate consulting fees for proprietary routing algorithms developed by Bradley’s firm!”
“Bradley Thornton is a certified tennis coach with no background in software engineering,” Ethan Carter said quietly from across the table. “We pulled his tax returns under subpoena this morning. He doesn’t even know what an intermodal routing algorithm is.”
Daniel turned on Ethan, baring his teeth. “You traitorous little rat! I gave you this job! I paid your salary!”

“You paid me to ensure this company followed the law,” Ethan replied steadily. “You should have let me do my job.”
