Chapter 6 - The Needle of Hope

The sterile glow of the clean room cast long shadows over the stainless steel medical beds. Caleb moved with frantic precision, drawing the luminescent silver serum from Julian’s wooden music box into two micro-infusion syringes.
"The process won't be painless," Caleb warned, turning to Celeste and the girls. "When the neural pathways unlock, the sudden surge of bio-electrical activity will cause intense muscular spasms. It will feel like fire in their veins."
Ivy looked at her sister. For eleven years, they had shared everything—the silent looks, the unspoken grief, the shared humiliation of being stared at by society elites who viewed them as tragic heiresses in golden cages.
"We've lived with numbness our whole lives," Ivy said softly, holding out her slender arm. "A little fire won't break us."
Esme nodded, taking her sister’s other hand. "Do it, Uncle Caleb."
Celeste stood between them, holding both of their free hands, kissing their foreheads repeatedly. "I’m here. I’m not leaving. Whatever comes, we face it together."
Caleb inserted the IV needles into the ports of their spinal catheters.
For three long seconds, nothing happened.
Then, both girls arched their backs in unison, a sharp, collective gasp tearing from their throats. The monitors spiked into red zones as digital telemetry mapped an explosion of neural firing throughout their lower spinal columns.
"Hold on to me!" Celeste wept, gripping them with all her strength as tears poured freely down her face. "Mommy’s got you! Breathe, my loves, breathe!"
On the overhead security monitors, the countdown timer was brutal. Thorne’s team had reached the secondary tunnel. The first breach charge detonated with a deafening rumble that shook dust from the subterranean ceiling. Structural warning alarms began to blare.
Warning: Perimeter integrity compromised. Structural collapse in fourteen minutes.
"Celeste," Caleb shouted over the screech of alarms, pointing at the main diagnostic terminal. "Julian didn't just store the cure here. He stored the master server containing the raw surveillance footage from the night of his murder and the encrypted accounts Thorne used to fund his mercenary army."
Celeste wiped the tears from her cheeks, her gaze turning from protective mother to avenging titan. "Can we broadcast it?"
"If we can route the signal through the penthouse transmitter array on the 80th floor," Caleb replied grimly. "From down here, Thorne’s jamming field blocks external frequencies. Someone has to carry the master drive to the top of the Voss Tower transmitter."
"I’ll go," Celeste said without hesitation.
"Mom, no!" Ivy cried out through her sweat-soaked gasps, her legs twitching with involuntary tremors as the serum surged through her nerves. "He’ll kill you!"
"He tried to take my husband," Celeste said, leaning down and kissing Ivy, then Esme, with fierce tenderness. "He tried to destroy my children. He has taken the last thing he will ever take from this family."
She grabbed the black hard drive from Caleb’s hand and unholstered a flare gun from the laboratory emergency kit.

"Caleb, protect my girls. When they can move, take the old subway evacuation hatch behind the furnace."
With a final, lingering look at her daughters, Celeste slipped through the emergency access hatch and began her ascent into the lion's den.
