Chapter 5 - THE LABYRINTH BELOW

Celeste stood up slowly, positioning her body entirely between Thorne’s weapon and her daughters. Her voice was no longer trembling; it was glacial, commanding, and filled with the lethal authority of an empress protecting her realm.

"You will never touch them, Victor."

"You don't have a choice," Thorne smirked. "I control the city's private security grid. The local police think there is an active hostage situation staged by Vance. In ten minutes, this entire estate will be leveled in a 'gas explosion.' Your company, your fortune, and your husband's legacy belong to my syndicate."

Suddenly, Ivy pressed a concealed button on the side of her wheelchair armrest.

It wasn't a standard manufacturer's button. Years of being confined to these chairs had led the twins to tinker, hack, and map every automation circuit in the smart-mansion using their father's old developer tablets.

"Mom, duck!" Ivy screamed.

The high-pressure fire-suppression nozzles in the kitchen ceiling blasted industrial liquid nitrogen foam at two hundred pounds per square inch. A blinding wall of sub-zero fog engulfed Thorne and his mercenaries. The mercenaries cried out in shock as the freezing compound blinded their tactical visors and froze the firing pins of their rifles.

"Now!" Esme shouted, accelerating her wheelchair toward the service freight lift.

Caleb shoved the lift gate open, rolling the girls inside while Celeste scrambled in behind them. Caleb slammed the manual descent lever. The industrial freight elevator plummeted into the dark depths of the subterranean bedrock beneath Manhattan.

Above them, Thorne’s enraged roar echoed through the shaft followed by a barrage of blind gunfire that tore through the metal roof of the elevator cab.

The car slammed into the bottom terminal with a jarring crunch. They stepped out into a damp, stone-walled tunnel illuminated by faint emergency strip lighting—the forgotten foundations of the 19th-century distillery upon which the Voss estate had been built.

"The clean room is three hundred yards down this corridor," Caleb said, helping steady the girls' chairs over the uneven cobblestone flooring. "We have to administer the Genesis serum immediately. It requires a four-hour cellular bonding phase under controlled temperature, or the peptide bonds decay."

"Can it really restore their mobility?" Celeste asked, her voice cracking as she held Esme's hand while jogging alongside them.

"Julian proved it on primate models," Caleb replied, his eyes fierce with conviction. "The paralysis wasn't irreversible nerve death; it was an artificial synaptic blockage. The serum acts as a biological molecular key. It flushes the synthetic toxin and regenerates the myelin sheath within hours."

They arrived at a monolithic titanium blast door bearing the emblem of Voss Genitech's founding days. In the center was a dual-hand biometric scanner.

"Ivy. Esme. Place your hands on the glass," Celeste urged gently.

The girls lifted their small, trembling hands and pressed them against the cold scanning surface. The green light swept over their palms.

Biometrics confirmed. Welcome home, Ivy and Esme Voss.

The massive door hissed open, revealing a fully operational, hermetically sealed underground laboratory filled with humming servers, cryogenic chambers, and medical monitoring bays.

They were safe—for now. But on the surveillance monitors glowing along the wall, they could see Thorne’s tactical team setting high-yield breaching charges on the tunnel walls above them.

They had less than thirty minutes before the ceiling collapsed.
