Chapter 9 - THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURY

Two weeks later, the Federal District Court in the state capital witnessed the largest political and criminal trial in modern history. The courtroom was surrounded by three cordons of federal marshals, with thousands of citizens protesting outside, demanding justice for the victims of the Hamilton-Sterling syndicate.

Clara Morales walked into the courtroom not as a defendant, but as the chief protected witness for the United States Department of Justice. Dressed in a dignified emerald dress, her head held high, she took her seat beside Leo Campbell, who had officially been appointed Special Assistant to the Federal Prosecutor.

On the defense side sat Margaret Hamilton and Senator Victor Sterling, both clad in orange prison jumpsuits, stripped of their vanity, jewelry, and power.

When the prosecution called Elena Hamilton to the stand, a collective gasp swept through the international press gallery. Elena testified for four straight hours, detailing every medical horror, every threat, and every financial transaction Margaret had executed to steal the family fortune and keep her captive.

Then came the definitive evidence: the security surveillance tapes from the private Swiss facility, recovered by federal agents during a coordinated raid, showing Margaret visiting the clinic in person to authorize increased sedation for her daughter-in-law.

Margaret broke down during cross-examination. Her poise shattered, she screamed at the judge, at her son, and at Clara. "I built this dynasty! I did what was necessary to protect our bloodline from common peasants and disobedient wives!"

Judge Bennett’s voice was as cold as steel when he delivered the verdict after less than an hour of jury deliberation. "Margaret Hamilton, Victor Sterling: for the crimes of conspiracy, human trafficking, attempted murder, and systemic fraud, you are hereby sentenced to life imprisonment at the maximum-security federal facility, without the possibility of parole."

The sound of the gavel striking the sound block was the final nail in the coffin of their corrupt empire. As Margaret was led away, she caught Clara’s eye. Clara did not look at her with hatred or spite—only with the quiet, devastating pity of a woman who possessed the one thing money could never buy: an unbroken soul.
