Chapter 3 - THE SECRET IN THE SKETCHBOOK

"Stop! Don’t you dare hurt my Clara!"
Every head in Courtroom 3B snapped toward the aisle. Idan, his designer school blazer rumpled and his knee scuffed from running, stood in the doorway. Behind him, the mansion's frantic nanny stumbled in, panting and pleading for the boy to stop. But Idan broke away, his sneakers squeaking loudly against the polished marble as he raced straight toward the defense table.
"Idan!" Adam bolted out of his chair, shock cracking through his stoic composure. "What are you doing here? Someone take him outside!"
"No, Daddy, let me speak!" Idan shouted, burying his face into Clara’s waist for a fleeting second of comfort before turning to face the judge. "Clara didn't take the blue necklace! She never touched it!"
Judge Bennett banged his gavel with authority, but his stern expression softened as he looked down at the panting child. "Counsel, control your client's supporters. Bailiff, please escort the minor."
"Your Honor, please!" Leo stepped forward, seizing the moment with desperate courage. "The child is a resident of the household where the alleged theft occurred. Under Rule 601, any witness with firsthand competence may offer testimony."
Vance rose immediately, his voice booming with indignation. "This is an outrage! The defense is exploiting a traumatized, confused seven-year-old boy to manufacture sympathy! The child was asleep when the theft occurred!"
"I was not asleep!" Idan yelled back, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks. He reached inside his small backpack and pulled out a leather-bound sketchbook—the very one Clara had bought him for his birthday. "I was awake! I was playing hide-and-seek with Barnaby the cat in the attic hallway!"
Margaret’s face paled instantly, the aristocratic color draining from her cheeks until she looked like a marble statue. She lunged forward over the wooden railing. "Adam, get him out of here right now! This is entirely inappropriate!"
"Sit down, Mrs. Hamilton!" Judge Bennett commanded, his sharp gaze cutting straight to Margaret’s uncharacteristic panic. He turned back to Idan. "Young man, what did you see?"
Idan opened his sketchbook and held it up for the entire court to see. On the page was a detailed crayon drawing of a woman with high heels and a silver fur shawl slipping a sparkling blue necklace into an old wooden chest hidden beneath floorboards. Next to the drawing was a scribble of a grandfather clock showing 8:15 PM.
"Grandmother didn't lose the necklace," Idan declared, pointing his finger directly at Margaret. "She took it out of Daddy's safe herself! I saw her hide it under the loose floorboard in the attic storage room behind the old wardrobe. She told me it was a special magic trick for Daddy's surprise party, and she promised that if I told anyone, the monsters under my bed would take Clara away forever!"
A deafening roar of gasps erupted across the courtroom. Reporters stood up, their shutters clicking furiously. Adam stood frozen in the center of the room, staring at his son, then at his mother, the reality of a monstrous betrayal slowly crashing into his mind.
Margaret rose to her feet, shrieking, "The boy is lying! That woman brainwashed him!"

Judge Bennett’s gavel hammered three times with thunderous force. "Bailiffs, secure the courtroom doors! Detective Miller, take a squad to the Hamilton estate immediately to execute an emergency search of the attic floorboards!"
