Chapter 8 - THE SIEGE AT PIER 14

"Adam Hamilton, you always were a disappointment to your mother," Senator Sterling mocked, leaning over the rusted railing of the catwalk. "Margaret had the vision to build an empire. You were content with being a sentimental weakling."
"You put my wife in hell for five years, Sterling!" Adam roared, pulling Elena behind him as his bodyguards raised their tactical shields. "You will die in a federal penitentiary!"
"History is written by the survivors, Mr. Hamilton," Sterling sneered, raising his hand to give the kill order. "Take them all out. Burn the warehouse to the ground and write it off as an industrial accident."
Gunfire erupted in a deafening barrage. Adam’s guards returned fire, creating a wall of lead that pinned the mercenaries on the high catwalks.
"Clara! Leo! Take Elena to the underground access tunnel behind the generator!" Adam shouted over the deafening cracks of rifle fire. He grabbed a dropped weapon from an injured guard, showing a fierce courage Clara had never seen in him before. "I will cover you! Go!"
Clara grabbed Elena’s arm, guiding her through the crossfire while Leo shielded the evidence briefcase with his own body. As they reached the rusted iron hatch of the maintenance tunnel, a bullet struck the metal frame inches from Clara’s ear.
One of Sterling’s mercenaries dropped down from a ladder, blocking their path with a tactical combat knife drawn. Leo lunged at the man, tackling him around the waist, but the mercenary slammed Leo against the concrete wall, sending the briefcase skidding across the oil-stained floor toward the edge of an open furnace pit.
Clara didn't hesitate. She threw herself onto the floor, catching the strap of the briefcase just as it hovered over the flames. The mercenary turned toward her, raising his boot to crush her ribs—when a thunderous gunshot echoed through the bay. The mercenary collapsed.
Standing ten yards away, his shoulder bleeding from a graze, was Adam. He rushed over, pulling Clara to her feet. "Get Elena to the federal building. Don't stop for anything!"
"Adam, what about you?" Clara yelled above the sirens echoing in the distance.

"I have to settle this debt myself," Adam replied, turning back toward the catwalk where Sterling was attempting to escape.
