Chapter 5 - BURIED ASHES

Three months passed. Clara used the small restitution settlement granted by the state to open a quaint, cozy bakery on the corner of 5th and Elm, a lifelong dream she had harbored for decades. Idan visited her every Saturday afternoon, accompanied by a polite driver and under the strict supervision of family court monitors. Adam respected Clara's boundaries, sending flowers and donations anonymously, which Clara systematically redirected to local homeless shelters.
One stormy Friday evening, while Clara was wiping down the bakery counters, the door chime chimed frantically. Standing in the doorway was not a customer, but a shivering, soaked woman wrapped in an oversized trench coat. When she pushed back her hood, Clara dropped her cleaning rag in terror.
It was Elena Vance—the estranged, supposedly deceased mother of Idan and late wife of Adam Hamilton.
"Clara... you have to listen to me," Elena gasped, clutching a waterlogged leather briefcase to her chest. "They told the world I died in a boating accident five years ago. But Margaret didn't just frame you. She orchestrated my disappearance."
Clara stood paralyzed against the counter. "Elena? That's impossible... we buried your memorial casket! Adam mourned you for years!"
"Adam was lied to!" Elena sobbed, collapsing onto one of the wooden cafe chairs. "When I discovered that Margaret was laundering cartel money through the Hamilton Charitable Foundation, she had me drugged and shipped to a private sanitarium in Switzerland under a fake identity. I escaped two weeks ago when her arrest paralyzed her financial pipeline. But Margaret’s partners... they are hunting me. And they are coming for Idan."

Before Clara could comprehend the nightmare unfolding before her, the headlights of an idling black SUV cut through the dark bakery windows. Two masked men stepped out into the pouring rain, racking the slides of semi-automatic pistols.
