Chapter 5 - BLOOD MONEY AND SAFE DEPOSIT BOXES

Within two hours, the grand ballroom of the Sullivan estate was transformed into a high-tech tactical command center. Server racks hummed along the gold-leaf walls, while a dozen forensic cyber analysts in crisp black shirts worked across glowing arrays of monitors.

In the south guest wing, far removed from the tension, Charlotte sat on the edge of an enormous king-sized bed. Scarlet was fast asleep beneath an Egyptian cotton duvet, thoroughly exhausted after eating a towering plate of castle-shaped pancakes. Across the room, Ryan and Tyler slept soundly in two newly delivered wooden cribs, their tiny chests rising and falling in peaceful rhythm.

Charlotte looked at the two infants. Only seven hours ago, they were minutes from drowning in the freezing Atlantic surf. Now, they were surrounded by silk, security, and a father willing to burn the city down to protect them.

The heavy oak door opened softly. Lucas stepped inside, holding two mugs of hot coffee. He had changed into a clean black cashmere sweater, but the exhaustion etched into his face told of days without sleep.

"She's sleeping like an angel," Lucas said quietly, glancing at Scarlet before handing Charlotte a mug.

"She had an eventful morning," Charlotte whispered, taking the coffee. "Mr. Sullivan, I heard the guards talking in the hallway. That phone call... they're threatening us, aren't they?"

Lucas pulled up a chair and sat opposite her. His gaze was steady, intense, and deeply apologetic. "I am so sorry, Charlotte. You did the most heroic thing anyone could ever do, and my toxic world dragged you into its crosshairs."

"Who are they?" Charlotte asked, her voice steady. "Elena couldn't have organized armed men on speedboats from a police holding cell."

"Her brother, Julian Mercer," Lucas said, his jaw tightening. "He was my Chief Financial Officer and the director of our offshore investments. For three years, Julian has been secretly embezzling hundreds of millions from Sullivan Global into an international criminal cartel known as the Vanguard Syndicate. When my father died and left the majority shares tied to my biological heirs, Julian and Elena realized they would be audited the moment the trust fully vested in my name next week."

"So they needed the trust to go to Elena," Charlotte deduced, her eyes wide. "Because Elena would never audit her own brother."

"Exactly," Lucas said. "Elena hired a rogue nanny to drug the boys yesterday afternoon while I was in Tokyo on business. She staged a boating accident, claimed the bodies were lost at sea, and planned to have them quietly drowned miles away. But the nanny..."

Lucas paused, reaching into his pocket and pulling out the two gold necklaces that Charlotte had found on the boys.

"The nanny couldn't go through with killing them," Lucas said, his voice thick with emotion. "She took Elena's money, but instead of throwing the carriers into the deep ocean from the boat, she brought them close to the shore, tied them to driftwood so they wouldn't drift out to sea immediately, and put my emergency contact pendants around their necks. She hoped someone would find them before the tide came up."

"And Scarlet did," Charlotte murmured.

"Scarlet did," Lucas agreed, looking at Charlotte with an intensity that made her breath catch. "You both saved my life. And I swear on my mother’s grave, nothing will ever happen to you or your daughter."

Suddenly, the door flew open. Marcus, the security chief, stood in the hallway, his face grim.

"Lucas! Cyber intelligence just cracked Julian Mercer's encrypted offshore ledger. He didn't flee the country yet. He’s heading toward the private marina at Biscayne Bay with a team of mercenaries. They're preparing to scuttle a yacht carrying five hundred million in bearer bonds and the original forged trust documents."

Lucas stood up, his posture instantly transforming into that of a commanding general. "Is the yacht docked?"

"It's preparing to cast off in twenty minutes," Marcus replied. "If they hit international waters, we'll never track the financial trail back to the Vanguard board members."

"Marcus, scramble the helicopter and alert the maritime tactical unit," Lucas ordered.

Charlotte stood up, her maternal instincts flaring. "Lucas, wait. If they know you're coming by air, they'll destroy the documents before you can board."

Lucas stopped, looking back at her. "What do you suggest?"

"My brother used to work as a harbor mechanic at that exact marina," Charlotte said, stepping forward. "There is a shallow maintenance canal beneath Pier 14 that bypasses the main harbor security cameras. You can put a boat directly beneath their hull without them ever seeing you on radar."

Lucas stared at her, a look of profound respect flashing in his eyes. "You know the layout?"

"I grew up on those docks," Charlotte said firmly. "I'm coming with you."

"Absolutely not," Lucas refused instantly. "It's too dangerous."

"You need someone who knows the manual bypass codes for the floodgates," Charlotte insisted, her voice unyielding. "Otherwise, your tactical team will be trapped in the open channel. My daughter is safe here with twenty armed guards and the babies. Let me help you finish this."

Lucas looked into Charlotte’s determined blue eyes and realized there was no stopping her.

May you like

"All right," Lucas said, grabbing his tactical jacket. "Let's take down an empire."
