Chapter 4 - THE MANSION OF SHADOWS

Lucas’s eyes snapped to his security chief. "What happened at the house?"

"Our perimeter sensors were tripped five minutes ago," Marcus reported, tapping his earpiece. "Two armed men broke into the master study. They didn't go for the art or the jewelry safe. They breached the sub-floor vault where you keep the family trust originals and the encrypted hard drives."

Lucas cursed under his breath. "Elena wasn't working alone. She couldn't have set up those Cayman shell accounts in twelve hours without an insider on the board."

"Who else knew about the trust deadline?" Detective Cole asked, stepping back into the room after handing Elena over to the transport unit.

"Only three people," Lucas replied, his eyes narrowing into slits. "My chief financial officer, Julian Mercer; my late father’s estate attorney, Arthur Sterling; and my stepbrother, Gregory."

Lucas turned to Charlotte. "I have to secure the estate and find out how deep this rot goes. But I am not leaving you and Scarlet unprotected. Elena’s associates might realize who found the boys."

"Mr. Sullivan, we have our cottage on the beach," Charlotte said, feeling an instinctive urge to retreat to her quiet, familiar life. "We can just go home. Lock the doors."

"Charlotte," Lucas said softly, his voice leaving no room for argument. "The people who tried to drown two seven-month-old babies do not leave loose ends. That beach cottage has peeling wood and a broken shutter. You are coming with me to the Star Island compound. It is a fortified sanctuary. You and Scarlet will have private quarters, medical staff, and round-the-clock guards."

Scarlet looked up at her mother, her eyes wide with curiosity. "Mommy, does he have pancakes at his big house?"

A rare, genuine smile broke across Lucas’s exhausted face. "Scarlet, I have a private chef who makes chocolate chip pancakes shaped like castles. Whatever you want, it's yours."

Scarlet gasped. "Mommy, we have to go!"

Charlotte couldn't help but smile faintly despite the overwhelming terror of the situation. "All right. But just until the police finish their investigation."

Ten minutes later, the massive convoy rolled out of the hospital courtyard. Ryan and Tyler rested in new medical-grade transport bassinets inside Lucas’s armored SUV, accompanied by two pediatric nurses. Charlotte and Scarlet sat in the plush leather seats opposite Lucas, gazing out the tinted windows as Miami flashed by in a blur of palm trees and flashing police cruisers.

They crossed the private causeway onto Star Island, passing through two heavy iron security gates guarded by private security personnel with assault rifles and guard dogs. The Sullivan estate was a sprawling, Mediterranean-revival palace constructed of white limestone, surrounded by manicured emerald lawns, towering royal palms, and the sparkling blue waters of Biscayne Bay.

Yet as the SUV pulled into the grand motor court, the illusion of paradise shattered.

Three Sullivan Global security guards lay wounded on the marble steps near the grand entrance, being treated by private paramedics. Shattered glass from the second-story balcony littered the driveway.

"Stay inside the vehicle!" Marcus ordered, drawing his sidearm as tactical teams swarmed the front doors.

"Is the house clear?" Lucas demanded over the radio.

"Breach team moved through the north wing," a static-filled voice replied through the console. "Intruders escaped by water via a stolen speedboat docked at the rear pier. But Mr. Sullivan... they left something in the study. You need to see this."

Lucas instructed the nurses and Charlotte to remain inside the armored vehicle under the guard of four armed men. "I'll be right back. Scarlet, eat some of those strawberries in the console fridge."

Lucas strode through the massive double doors of his mansion, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached. He walked up the grand staircase and entered his personal study. The mahogany bookshelves had been ripped from the walls, paintings were slashed, and the floorboards beneath his desk were pried open.

On his desk sat a single black burner phone, vibrating relentlessly against the wood.

Detective Cole was already standing over it, wearing latex gloves. "It started ringing the moment we cleared the room."

Lucas picked up the phone and pressed the speaker button.

"Sullivan," Lucas said coldly.

A distorted, electronically altered voice came through the speaker, chilling the air in the room.

"Congratulations on reuniting with your bastards, Lucas," the voice sneered. "Elena was sloppy. A greedy amateur who thought drowning them at dawn was poetic. But don't think you've won. The trust paperwork is in our hands now. And if you don't step down as CEO of Sullivan Global by noon tomorrow and transfer eighty percent of the company voting shares to the Vanguard Syndicate... your little beach savior and her daughter will pay the price for pulling those boys out of the water."

The line went dead.

Lucas stared at the silent phone in his hand. A cold, terrifying fury settled deep into his bones.

They had threatened his sons. Now they were threatening Charlotte and Scarlet.

Lucas looked at Detective Cole. "Call every private intelligence contractor Sullivan Global retains in North America. Tell them we are going to war."
