Chapter 10 - JUSTICE AT LAST LIGHT

Six months later, the Federal Courthouse in downtown Miami was surrounded by hundreds of journalists, photographers, and news vans from every major network in the country.
Inside Courtroom 4B, the atmosphere was solemn and heavy with finality.
Judge Evelyn Vance banged her heavy wooden gavel against the sound block, bringing absolute silence to the packed gallery.
"In the matter of the United States versus Elena Sullivan, Julian Mercer, and Arthur Sterling," the judge's voice echoed through the high-ceilinged room, "the court has reviewed the jury's unanimous guilty verdicts on all forty-seven federal counts, including attempted murder of minors, corporate fraud, grand embezzlement, and criminal conspiracy."
Elena sat at the defense table in an orange prison jumpsuit, her wrists shackled to a chain around her waist. Her vanity had been stripped away; her graying hair hung limp, and her hollow eyes stared blankly at the polished wood table. Beside her, Julian and Sterling looked equally broken, their high-priced careers permanently extinguished.
"The actions of these defendants represent a level of calculated cruelty and greed that shocks the conscience of this court," Judge Vance continued firmly. "To leave two helpless infants to drown in the rising tide for personal financial gain is an act of pure evil."
The judge looked directly at Elena. "Elena Sullivan, on the charges of attempted premeditated murder and conspiracy, I sentence you to two consecutive terms of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole at the Federal Correctional Institution in Aliceville, Alabama."
Elena closed her eyes as a collective gasp and murmur swept through the courtroom gallery.
"Julian Mercer, for your role in the conspiracy and financial corruption, you are sentenced to forty-five years in federal prison. Arthur Sterling, for corporate treason and falsifying legal instruments, you are sentenced to thirty-five years."
BANG.
The gavel fell with the sound of a heavy steel door slamming shut forever.
"Court is adjourned."
The marshals immediately surrounded the convicts, leading them through the side security door into the holding cells below. Elena turned her head one last time to look at the gallery.
Sitting in the front row of the courtroom was Lucas Sullivan.
He was dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, looking healthier, stronger, and more radiant than ever. Sitting beside him, holding his hand with gentle, unshakeable support, was Charlotte. She wore an elegant cream dress, her face glowing with serene beauty and peace.
Lucas did not look at Elena with anger. He did not look at her with spite. He looked at her with complete, unburdened indifference—the way one looks at a forgotten shadow that can never touch the light again.
As the courtroom emptied, Lucas and Charlotte walked hand-in-hand down the grand marble steps of the courthouse into the bright Florida sunshine. A swarm of reporters surged forward with microphones and flashing cameras.
"Mr. Sullivan! How do you feel about the life sentence?"
"Ms. Parker! What is next for the Scarlet Parker Foundation?"
Lucas raised a hand, smiling warmly at the press corps. He pulled Charlotte closer to his side, wrapping a protective arm around her waist.
"Today, justice was served," Lucas said clearly, his voice carrying over the crowd of reporters. "The people who tried to destroy my family have been held accountable by the law. But more importantly, today marks the beginning of a new life. Sullivan Global has never been stronger, the Scarlet Foundation has already saved forty-two families along the coast, and my heart is completely full."
Lucas looked down at Charlotte, his eyes filled with undeniable, deep love.
"And now," Lucas said to the cameras, "if you'll excuse us, we have a very important first birthday party to attend."
May you like
The reporters cheered and parted ways as Lucas escorted Charlotte into the waiting convertible, leaving the courthouse and the dark past behind them forever.
