Chapter 3 - THE AUTOPSY THAT NEVER HAPPENED

The temperature in the trauma hallway plummeted to zero.

Elena Sullivan took a reflexive step backward, her designer heels clicking sharply on the linoleum. Her face was an unreadable mask of panic plastered over with years of socialite poise. Her legal counsel, Arthur Sterling—a man known across Florida for burying corporate scandals—quickly positioned himself between Lucas and his wife.

"Lucas, let's keep our composure," Sterling said, raising two manicured hands. "Elena has been through an unimaginable trauma. We were informed by Dr. Vance at the private clinic that the infants were lost during the yacht malfunction. There was confusion—"

"Confusion?" Charlotte’s voice cut across the room before she could stop herself.

Everyone turned to look at the young mother standing near the doorway. Charlotte stepped forward, her eyes blazing with fierce maternal indignation.

"Those baby carriers were tied to driftwood with heavy nylon sailing rope," Charlotte said, staring straight into Elena’s guilty eyes. "They were placed below the high-tide line right when the morning tide was rising. Whoever put them there didn't lose them. They timed the ocean to drown them before anyone woke up."

Elena's eyes narrowed with venomous disgust as she looked at Charlotte’s worn sweatshirt and sandy feet. "And who is this homeless beach scavenger? Lucas, are you taking the word of a drifter over your own wife and our personal physician?"

Lucas moved with terrifying speed.

Before Arthur Sterling could react, Lucas bypassed the lawyer entirely, stopping two inches from Elena's face. His towering six-foot-three frame completely shadowed her. The air between them crackled with lethal tension.

"Do not speak to the woman who saved your stepsons," Lucas whispered, his voice vibrating with a rage so potent that Elena visibly trembled. "Dr. Vance told me he personally received their bodies from the coast guard recovery unit. He said they were unrecognizable from water damage and advised against opening the bags. You stood in my study, crying into a silk handkerchief, begging me to sign the expedited private cremation papers so 'the media wouldn't gawk at our tragedy.'"

"Lucas, I was in shock!" Elena stammered, clutching her throat. "The doctor told me—"

"The doctor is currently being arrested at his private clinic in Coral Gables," a deep voice boomed from the end of the corridor.

Detective Marcus Cole of the Miami-Dade Homicide Division walked into the room, flanked by four state troopers. He was a veteran detective with tired gray eyes, a heavy trench coat, and a badge clipped to his belt. He held up a clear evidence bag containing a charred hard drive and a stack of printed medical forms.

"Dr. Vance didn't even make it out of his back office," Detective Cole announced, his eyes fixed on Elena. "We intercepted him trying to burn the intake logs. Turns out, there was no Coast Guard recovery dispatch. No body bags. Just a wire transfer for two million dollars sent at 3:15 AM from an offshore shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands."

Elena’s lawyer immediately intervened. "My client knows nothing about any financial transfers. We are leaving immediately until formal charges—"

"Nobody is leaving," Cole snapped. "Mrs. Sullivan, your private driver has already rolled on you. He admitted he drove a black unmarked van to Key Biscayne at 4:30 this morning under your direct instructions."

Elena gasped, her eyes darting frantically toward the hospital exits, but Sullivan Global private security officers stood shoulder-to-shoulder with state troopers at every door.

"Lucas..." Elena breathed, dropping her haughty demeanor and reaching out to touch his arm with pleading, manicured fingers. "You have to listen to me. I was trying to protect our family's legacy. Your father's trust... the clause..."

Lucas recoiled from her touch as if she were a venomous viper.

"My father's trust," Lucas repeated, a sickening realization washing over his face. "If I had no surviving biological heirs by my thirty-fifth birthday next week, eighty percent of the Sullivan Global holding company and the four-billion-dollar family trust automatically transferred to you as my legal spouse."

"You would have kept the company!" Elena pleaded, tears of pure self-preservation spilling over her eyeliner. "We would have built an empire together! Those children were from your surrogate—they were never mine! Why should two nameless infants inherit everything we worked for?"

"Because they are my sons," Lucas growled, his voice dropping to a deathly pitch. "And you are a monster."

Cole stepped forward and produced a pair of steel handcuffs. "Elena Sullivan, you are under arrest for two counts of attempted premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and filing false police reports. You have the right to remain silent."

As the cold steel snapped around Elena’s wrists, she looked at Charlotte and Scarlet with pure, unadulterated hatred. "You ruined everything," she spat at Charlotte. "You and your pathetic little brat!"

Scarlet tightened her grip on her mother’s hand, but she didn't look away. "Bad lady," Scarlet said clearly.

Elena was dragged away down the hall, her screams echoing off the sterile walls until the heavy doors swung shut.

Lucas stood motionless in the center of the room, his chest rising and falling. Then, slowly, he turned toward Charlotte and Scarlet. The billionaire CEO, worth billions, looked utterly broken by the magnitude of the betrayal.

"They have nothing," Lucas whispered, his voice cracking. "No clothes, no cribs at home—I cleared out the nursery yesterday because I couldn't bear to look at it. My life is a crime scene."

Charlotte walked over and gently placed a hand on his forearm. "Mr. Sullivan, they have the only thing that matters right now. They have you."

Lucas looked at her, and for the first time that morning, a flicker of genuine warmth touched his haunted eyes.

"I don't even know how to begin repaying you," he said.

"You don't owe us anything," Charlotte replied. "Just be their father."

Lucas shook his head firmly. "No. The world tried to take my boys away, and you stood in the ocean and pulled them back. You and your daughter are under my protection now. Whether you want it or not, Charlotte Parker... your lives are about to change."

Before Charlotte could protest, Lucas’s lead security officer sprinted back into the room, his face pale.
