Chapter 9 - BLOOD ON THE MARBLE

The siege of the Moretti estate was swift, brutal, and deafening.

Mikhail Kozlov had not brought a strike team; he had brought an invading army. Forty Russian mercenaries, armed with military-grade automatic rifles and night-vision optics, swarmed the expansive grounds, utilizing smoke grenades to blind the perimeter sentries.

From the second-floor master balcony, Rico operated with chilling efficiency. Firing an M4 carbine with practiced precision, he dropped three assailants breaching the lower terrace before retreating inside as a hail of return fire chewed through the French doors, shredding the heavy velvet curtains into smoking ribbons.

"Fall back to the grand foyer!" Rico barked into his tactical headset. "Funnel them through the main entrance! Dante, detonate the perimeter charges!"

A series of deafening explosions rocked the front lawn as concealed claymore mines detonated, tearing through the vanguard of Kozlov’s assault force. Screams of agony mingled with the relentless chatter of automatic gunfire. The smell of cordite and burning limestone filled the air.

Inside the bunker below, Clara felt the vibrations rattling the concrete floor. Dust drifted down from the ceiling vents. Leo sat curled on the small cot, his hands pressed hard over his ears, tears silently streaming down his cheeks.

"It's okay, baby," Clara whispered, sitting beside him, keeping one arm wrapped tightly around his trembling shoulders while her right hand held the Glock aimed steadily at the heavy vault door. "Daddy is going to protect us. It's almost over."

Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights in the bunker flickered and died. The hum of the ventilation system choked to a halt.

Emergency red backup lights clicked on, casting the bunker in a bloody, ominous glow.

Upstairs, the heavy oak double doors of the mansion were breached with a hydraulic ram. Kozlov’s men flooded into the grand foyer, their boots crunching over shattered crystal from the demolished chandelier.

Rico and Dante stood at the top of the sweeping marble staircase, firing downward into the smoke. Bodies tumbled across the polished stone floor. Rico reloaded with mechanical fluidity, his face splattered with blood that wasn't his own. Every instinct that had made him the most feared capo in the five boroughs was firing at maximum capacity. He wasn't just fighting for territory or pride; he was fighting for the family he had thought was lost to him forever.

"Moretti!" a booming voice echoed through the ruined foyer.

Stepping through the shattered entrance, flanked by four massive bodyguards in heavy tactical armor, walked Mikhail Kozlov. The Russian mobster was a hulking brute in his late fifties, his silver hair cropped close, an assault shotgun resting lazily in the crook of his arm.

"Give me the girl, Rico!" Kozlov shouted, his Russian accent thick and mocking. "Give me the girl and the ledgers, and I leave your house standing! Refuse, and I put your son in the ground right next to your dead wife!"

Rico’s vision turned red. A primal, suffocating fury consumed him.

"Dante," Rico whispered through clenched teeth. "The flank."

"On it, Boss."

Rico stood tall at the top of the stairs, stepping out of cover, completely exposed. He tossed his empty carbine aside and drew two Kimber .45s from his holsters.

"You should have stayed in Chicago, Mikhail," Rico said, his voice carrying the finality of a funeral bell.

Kozlov raised his shotgun, but before he could squeeze the trigger, Dante and six Moretti soldiers erupted from the concealed service hallways behind the Russians, opening fire with point-blank crossfire. The four bodyguards collapsed instantly under the storm of lead.

Kozlov fired wildly, the buckshot catching Rico in the left shoulder, spinning him violently against the marble banister. Pain flared white-hot through Rico’s torso, but he didn't stop. He pushed off the wall, vaulted over the banister, and landed heavily on the ground floor.

Kozlov scrambled to pump another shell into the chamber, but Rico closed the distance like a demon unleashed. Rico’s right fist smashed into Kozlov’s jaw, shattering bone and sending the Russian crashing across the bloody floor. Rico pinned him down with a knee against his throat, pressing the smoking barrel of his Kimber directly between Kozlov’s wide, terrified eyes.

"Wait—" Kozlov choked out, blood bubbling on his lips.

May you like

"For my family," Rico whispered.

He pulled the trigger.
