Chapter 4 - SECRETS IN THE SHADOWS

Two weeks inside the Moretti fortress felt like living in an alternate reality. The panic from the shooting had settled into a grim, tense routine. Clara’s third-floor suite was larger than any apartment she had ever rented, furnished with Italian linens and a private balcony that overlooked the harbor, but it was still a cage. Armed guards occupied every corner of the property, their eyes tracking her every move.

Yet, amidst the violence of Rico’s world, a fragile peace had begun to bloom within the nursery walls.

Leo was transforming. For the first time in six months, the boy was eating three meals a day. He laughed when Clara built towers out of wooden blocks and knocked them over with dramatic flourishes. He let her read him stories until his heavy eyelids drifted shut. The wild, unreachable grief that had suffocated the toddler had begun to recede, replaced by a desperate, beautiful attachment to the woman who smelled like lavender soap and spoke without raising her voice.

Rico noticed. He noticed everything.

He began showing up in the nursery during the quiet hours of the evening, his tie discarded, his sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms corded with muscle and crisscrossed with faded scars. He would sit in the oversized armchair in the corner, holding a leather folder of syndicate balance sheets, but Clara knew he wasn't reading them. He was watching her.

"He called you 'Mama' this morning," Rico said quietly one evening. Leo was on the floor, deeply absorbed in rolling a toy truck across the carpet.

Clara froze, her hands pausing over the pages of a picture book. A nervous chill danced down her spine. "I corrected him immediately, Mr. Moretti. I told him my name is Clara."

"I know," Rico said, rising from the chair and walking toward her with unhurried, measured strides. "Dante told me. You don't have to look so terrified, Miss Vance. I don't blame you."

"I don't want him to be confused," she said, looking down at her hands. "Elena was his mother. I'm just... the hired help."

"You're not just the hired help, and you know it," Rico murmured, stopping just inches from where she sat on the edge of the low play table. The heat radiating from his body was intoxicating, mixing with the scent of cedar and clean linen. He reached out, his thumb lightly brushing against the small, jagged scar at the base of her throat.

Clara’s breath hitched. Her entire body locked up, caught between the instinct to pull away and the overwhelming urge to lean into the warmth of his calloused thumb.

"Where did you get this?" Rico asked, his voice rough, dipped in gravel.

"A car accident," she lied softly, her gaze dropping to his chest to avoid his piercing blue eyes. "When I was nineteen."

Rico tilted her chin upward with a gentle pressure that brooked no resistance. His eyes searched hers with the precision of a master interrogator. "You're a terrible liar, Clara. But I won't press you. Not yet. Everyone has a past they're trying to bury. In my line of work, the only thing that matters is loyalty in the present."

Before Clara could find her voice, the heavy door clicked open. Dante stepped in, his expression grimmer than usual, a secure tablet held in his hand.

"Boss," Dante said, glancing briefly at Clara with an edge of hesitation. "We cracked the comms from the sniper's rifle. The contract didn't come from the Tarasov syndicate in Queens."

Rico’s hand dropped from Clara’s chin, his demeanor instantly freezing back into the terrifying capo of the Moretti family. "Who was it, Dante?"

"It came from inside our own council," Dante said, his voice dropping low. "Salvatore Lucchese. He’s calling an emergency meeting at the warehouse district tonight. He’s claiming you’ve lost your grip on the boroughs because of the boy. He's planning a vote of no confidence."

Rico’s lips curled into a cold, lethal smile that made the hairs on Clara’s arms stand up. "A vote? Salvatore thinks we run a democracy." He turned back to Clara, his eyes blazing with an ancient, dark fire. "Put Leo to bed, Clara. Lock the nursery from the inside. Don't open the door for anyone except me."

"Rico," she blurted out, using his first name for the very first time.

He paused at the threshold, looking back over his shoulder.

May you like

"Be careful," she whispered.

Something softened in the hard contours of his face, just for a fraction of a second. "I have something to come back to now," he said, and then he was gone into the night.
