Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF AMBITION

The old Brooklyn Navy Yard was shrouded in thick, sulfurous fog rolling off the East River. Inside Warehouse 4, the air smelled of diesel exhaust, brine, and betrayal.

Ten high-ranking capos of the Moretti family council sat around a makeshift steel table under the flickering yellow glow of industrial sodium lamps. At the head of the table sat Salvatore Lucchese, a sixty-year-old veteran of the syndicate with a face like pitted granite and rings of gold on every finger.

"He's compromised," Salvatore was saying, slamming a heavy fist onto the table. "Rico hasn't collected on the dock shipments in two weeks! He’s holed up in that fortress playing house with a cheap little waitress he pulled out of an apron! If we don't act now, the Russians will swallow our shipping lanes whole by next month!"

"And what do you propose, Salvatore?"

The voice didn't come from the table. It echoed from the deep shadows of the high-ceilinged warehouse rafters.

Salvatore froze, his hand dropping toward his waistband.

The heavy corrugated metal door of the warehouse screeched open, admitting a gust of freezing wind. Rico walked in alone. He wore a heavy black cashmere overcoat, his hands resting casually inside his pockets. Behind him, emerging from the fog like wraiths, stepped Dante and twenty heavily armed loyalist soldiers, their rifles raised and locked onto every man seated at the table.

The council members pushed their chairs back in sheer panic, hands flying into the air.

"Rico," Salvatore stammered, his bravado instantly draining into sickly paleness. "This was just a private discussion. We were talking about supply chains—"

"You ordered a hit on my home," Rico said smoothly, his boots echoing rhythmically against the oil-stained concrete as he closed the distance. "You put high-caliber rounds through my son's bedroom window."

"That's a lie!" Salvatore shouted, sweat beading across his wrinkled forehead. "That's Russian propaganda, Rico! I’ve been loyal to your father, and I’ve been loyal to you!"

Rico stopped at the edge of the table. He pulled a small digital audio recorder from his coat pocket and tossed it onto the steel surface. He tapped the play button with a gloved finger.

Salvatore’s own recorded voice crackled through the speaker: “Take the boy out first. Rico will lose his mind, and when he unravels, we put him down and seize the ports.”

A dead, heavy silence smothered the warehouse. The other capos immediately backed away from Salvatore, creating a wide, damning perimeter of space around the traitor.

"You broke the cardinal rule, Salvatore," Rico said, his voice terrifyingly devoid of emotion. "You brought children into a dispute between men."

"Rico, please!" Salvatore dropped to his knees on the filthy concrete, his hands clasped in desperation. "We were family! Your father named me your godfather!"

"My father is dead," Rico replied, drawing his Kimber with a smooth, unhurried motion. "And you stopped being family the second your bullet touched my son's wall."

The muffled crack of the suppressed weapon was swallowed by the heavy fog outside.

Thirty minutes later, Rico sat in the back of the Escalade as it sped through the empty streets toward Brooklyn Heights. The adrenaline of the execution had faded, leaving behind an acrid taste of exhaustion. He stared out the tinted window at the rain beginning to streak across the glass.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. It was a secure line connecting directly to the nursery monitor in his estate.

He clicked the feed open. On the small screen, Clara was sitting on the nursery rug, holding Leo against her shoulder as she swayed gently back and forth in the soft glow of a nightlight. She was humming that same quiet Scandinavian melody. The boy was fast asleep, his small hand tucked safely under Clara’s chin.

Rico let his thumb trace Clara’s face on the glass screen. For five years, his entire existence had been defined by violence, power, and the bitter cold of survival. But looking at the two of them, safe behind his walls, a terrifying realization settled in his chest: he was falling in love with a woman he knew almost nothing about.

And in his world, love was the most dangerous vulnerability a man could possess.
