Chapter 8 - THE HUNT IN THE DARK

"They tracked her," Rico said, his mind calculating variables with lethal, machine-like speed. The rage that had clouded his vision moments earlier evaporated, replaced by the cold, absolute focus of a general preparing for war. "How did they find her?"

"Il Destino," Dante replied grimly. "The night she calmed Leo. A dozen civilian diners took videos on their phones before Marco cleared the floor. One of them hit TikTok. It got two million views before our scrubbers took it down. The Kozlovs ran facial recognition on the waitress kneeling next to you."

Clara gasped, pulling Leo tighter against her chest. "They're coming here. They're going to kill me, and they'll kill anyone who gets in their way. Rico, you have to let me go. If I leave, they'll follow me—"

"Shut up," Rico commanded, but this time, the bite was gone. He knelt down on the kitchen floor in front of her, his large hands reaching out to cup her tear-streaked face. His thumbs wiped away the wetness on her cheeks with surprising gentleness. "Listen to me, Claire. Or Clara. I don't give a damn what name is on your birth certificate. You protected my son. You brought light back into this godforsaken mausoleum. No one touches you under my roof."

"You don't know Kozlov," she whispered, her voice trembling. "He's a butcher. He doesn't care about rules or territory."

"Neither do I," Rico whispered back, his lips brushing against her forehead in a promise that made her soul shiver. "Dante, initiate Blackout Protocol. Move all non-essential staff off the estate. I want thirty men on the perimeter, heavy ordnance, and zero mercy. We don't defend this house. We turn it into a slaughterhouse."

"Understood, Boss."

Within twenty minutes, the sprawling estate transformed into a military stronghold. Heavy steel shutters locked down over every entrance. The lush exterior floodlights were killed, plunging the five-acre grounds into total, impenetrable darkness beneath the heavy November fog.

Rico escorted Clara and Leo down into the reinforced sub-basement—not the panic room, but an underground bunker reinforced with two feet of poured concrete and steel rebar beneath the wine cellar.

"Stay here," Rico said, handing her a compact Glock 19. He racked the slide back, chambering a round, and placed it firmly into her hands. "The safety is off. If that steel door opens and it isn't me or Dante, you empty this magazine into the center of whatever walks through. Do you understand me?"

Clara looked down at the cold, heavy weapon, then up into his dark eyes. "Rico... please come back."

Rico grabbed the back of her neck, pulled her roughly against his chest, and crushed his lips against hers. It was a kiss born of violence, desperation, and raw, undeniable passion. Clara melted into him, her fingers tangling in the collar of his black shirt, kissing him back with everything she had kept hidden inside her heart.

He pulled away, breathless, his eyes burning with a possessive fire. "I will burn this entire city to the ground before I let anyone take you from me."

He stepped through the heavy vault door, sealed it with a four-digit electronic code, and left her in the quiet hum of the bunker with Leo clinging to her knees.

Above ground, the first concussive blast blew the front wrought-iron security gates off their hinges.
