Chapter 7 - A DOLL WITH A DEAD MAN'S SECRET

Dominic’s hand dropped from my face as we both sprinted inside. My heart was in my throat, visions of assassins breaching the penthouse flashing through my mind.
When we reached Lily’s bedroom, we found Ethan sitting on the floor beside her bed, surrounded by the stuffing of a large, vintage teddy bear that had been kept in Ethan’s playroom for years.
"I didn't mean to break it!" Ethan cried, looking up at us in panic. "Lily said there was something hard inside Mr. Bear's tummy that was poking her when she tried to hug it!"
Lily was sitting cross-legged on the duvet, holding a heavy, cylindrical object made of brushed titanium, no larger than a cigar tube.
Dominic immediately signaled for Marco to hold his position, while he slowly approached the bed, kneeling before my daughter. "Lily, sweetheart... give that to me very gently."
Lily handed the cylinder to Dominic with a bright, innocent smile. "It has pretty numbers on it, Mr. Dominic."
Dominic examined the device. Around the center of the cylinder were four rotating brass rings engraved with alphanumeric ciphers. It was an ultra-secure, tamper-proof offline cold storage drive—the kind used by elite cartels to store bank accounts, blackmail files, and assassination contracts.
"This belonged to my late wife, Sofia," Dominic murmured, his voice thick with sudden realization. "She died four years ago in what was ruled a hit-and-run accident. But before she died, she had bought this exact bear for Ethan's fourth birthday."
"Boss," Marco whispered, stepping closer. "Donna Sofia was the daughter of Don Moretti Senior. She managed the family's offshore ledgers before her passing."
Dominic’s jaw clenched as he stared at the cipher rings. "Sofia didn't die in an accident. She found out someone on the high council was embezzling hundreds of millions to fund a coup. She hid the ledger inside Ethan’s bear before they could kill her."
"Do you know the combination?" I asked, sitting on the edge of the bed and wrapping my arm around Ethan to comfort him.
Dominic looked at his son, then rotated the brass rings with practiced precision. He set the dials to Ethan’s exact birthdate and the coordinates of the church where they had baptized him.
With a soft, pneumatic click, the titanium cylinder unscrewed. Inside was a micro-drive and a folded piece of parchment written in elegant Italian handwriting.
Dominic unfolded the note. His eyes scanned the ink, and the color drained from his face, replaced by a volcanic, terrifying rage.
"It wasn't Falcone who organized the hit on Sofia," Dominic whispered, his voice shaking with venom. "Falcone was just a foot soldier. The man who orchestrated the poison on Ethan’s cake, the man who ordered the hit on my wife, and the man funding the shipment at the Brooklyn harbor... is Don Vincenzo."
Marco gasped. "Don Vincenzo? Your own uncle? The patriarch of the Five Families?"
"He wanted the Moretti empire for his own sons," Dominic said, crushing the parchment in his fist. "He waited until Ethan was eight, knowing that if the direct lineage was wiped out, the family constitution would automatically transfer all estate assets and territory to the elder brother—to him."
Dominic stood up, his towering silhouette casting a long shadow across the room. He inserted the micro-drive into Marco’s secure terminal. Within seconds, the screen flooded with encrypted manifests, wire transfer routes, and satellite coordinates of the harbor warehouse.
"He made one mistake," Dominic said coldly. "He didn't realize a three-year-old girl would tear his entire conspiracy apart."
Suddenly, the penthouse alarm began blaring a low warning tone. The primary power grid of the TriBeCa tower cut out, and the emergency red lights flashed to life.

On the security monitors, the live feed showed a convoy of six armored black vans pulling up directly outside the building’s main lobby, while a private military helicopter circled above the penthouse helipad.
Vincenzo wasn't waiting for dawn. He had come to finish the massacre himself.
