Chapter 5 - BLOOD IN THE CONSERVATORY

The words had barely left Dominic’s mouth when the first explosion rocked the north perimeter wall. The shockwave rattled the blast glass, and the estate’s auxiliary power flickered before dying completely, plunging the mansion into an eerie, blood-red emergency glow.

"Move!" Dominic barked.

I bolted into the adjoining room, lifting Ethan out of bed while Dr. Harris grabbed his emergency medical bag. In the master bedroom, I scooped Lily into my arms, wrapping her in a heavy cashmere blanket to keep her calm. She buried her face in my shoulder, whimpering softly as the sound of heavy automatic gunfire erupted from the gardens below.

"We take the underground tunnel through the conservatory," Dominic said, racking the slide of a tactical rifle he had pulled from a hidden wall compartment. "Marco and the loyal perimeter units are holding the front gate, but the back glasshouse is compromised."

We moved swiftly down the private service stairwell—a path I knew intimately after years of managing the estate’s cleaning schedules. Dominic led the way, his movements silent, lethal, and fluid. Every corner we turned, his rifle swept the darkness before signaling us forward.

When we reached the ground floor, we had to cross the massive glass conservatory—a botanical palace filled with rare tropical palms, marble fountains, and stone pathways. It was the only access point to the fortified subterranean garage.

As we stepped onto the stone pathway, the scent of damp soil and blooming orchids was shattered by the sharp stench of cordite.

"Hold," Dominic whispered, raising a clenched fist.

From behind a towering wall of fan palms, three figures stepped into the moonlight filtering through the shattered glass roof. They wore black tactical gear, night-vision goggles, and carried suppressed MPX carbines. But standing behind them was a man in a tailored grey suit with slicked-back silver hair.

Salvatore Falcone.

"Leaving so soon, Dominic?" Falcone sneered, adjusting his silk tie with sickening calm. "And you brought the domestic help. How sentimental."

Dominic stepped directly in front of me and the children, his broad frame creating an impenetrable wall. "You walked into my home, Sal. You touched my son's table. There is no hole on this earth deep enough to hide you."

Falcone chuckled, a dry, venomous sound. "Look around you, Dominic! Your empire is burning. The families in Chicago, Miami, and Brooklyn all agreed—you’ve gone soft. Obsessed with a dead wife’s memory and a fragile little boy. It’s time for new blood."

"Then come take it," Dominic replied with lethal serenity.

Falcone’s eyes flicked to Lily in my arms. "Kill the children first. Make him watch."

The lead gunman raised his carbine, but Dominic was faster. He dropped to one knee, firing two pinpoint rounds through the gunman's visor before the man could pull the trigger.

Chaos erupted.

Dominic rolled behind a solid marble fountain as a hail of bullets shattered the surrounding glass planters, showering us with dirt and shards. "Clara! The iron maintenance door behind the ferns! Go! Now!"

I didn't hesitate. Gripping Lily with one arm and pulling Ethan with my other hand, I sprinted across the stone path while Dr. Harris provided rear cover with a service pistol. A bullet grazed the stone pillar inches from my shoulder, showering sparks across my arm, but I pushed Ethan forward into the narrow iron doorway.

Behind us, Dominic rose from the fountain like an elemental force of destruction. He fired with terrifying accuracy, dropping the second mercenary with a shot through the throat, then advancing directly into the line of fire to flank the third.

Within seconds, the conservatory fell dead silent, save for the dripping water from the broken fountain and the ragged, terrified breathing of Sal Falcone, who was now pinned to the stone floor beneath Dominic’s boot.

"Wait... Dominic, please! We were brothers!" Falcone begged, clutching Dominic's pant leg with bloody fingers. "It wasn't just me! The cargo manifest... the shipment coming into Manhattan tomorrow morning... they have a weapon—"

Before Falcone could finish the sentence, a distant sniper round shattered through the glass ceiling from the tree line outside, striking Falcone squarely between the eyes.

Dominic spun, dragging us deep into the reinforced maintenance tunnel as the iron door slammed shut behind us.

We were in the tunnel, safe for the moment, but Falcone’s dying words hung in the darkness: the real attack on the city hadn't even begun.
