Chapter 6 - THE MANHATTAN CITADEL

Thirty minutes later, an armored black SUV tore down the West Side Highway under the cover of a torrential downpour, cutting through the neon-lit Manhattan night. Dominic drove with relentless focus, his knuckles white against the steering wheel, while Marco sat in the passenger seat coordinating with the surviving loyalist captains over encrypted channels.
In the back seat, Ethan had fallen asleep with his head in my lap, completely exhausted by the terror. Lily was curled up beside me, her small hand holding tightly onto my index finger.
I looked at the rearview mirror and caught Dominic’s gaze. His grey eyes were haunted, filled with a storm of fury and fierce protectiveness. Every few seconds, his eyes would flick to the mirror, checking on us before returning to the road.
"We’re entering the TriBeCa perimeter," Marco announced, typing furiously on his laptop. "The penthouse tower is locked down. Our private security controls the entire thirty-story building. No outside elevators, no public garage access."
The SUV descended into a private subterranean elevator beneath a non-descript luxury high-rise. Within moments, the vehicle was lifted directly into a private sky-garage attached to the top-floor penthouse.
The penthouse was a fortress suspended in the sky. Towering three stories above the city, it was encased in ballistic glass, with state-of-the-art surveillance grids and private medical facilities.
Dominic personally carried Ethan to a bedroom suite, while I carried Lily into an adjoining room, tucking her into the silk-lined bed. When she was safely asleep, I walked out into the vast, dimly lit living room overlooking the glittering Manhattan skyline.
Dominic stood on the private terrace despite the cold rain, leaning his hands against the stone balustrade. The wind whipped his dark hair, but he seemed completely numb to the freezing weather.
I picked up a warm wool throw from the sofa, walked outside, and gently draped it over his broad shoulders.
Dominic turned around. His face looked carved from granite, but when he saw me, the tension around his eyes softened. He reached up, his fingers wrapping over my hand where it rested on his shoulder.
"You should be resting, Clara," he said quietly. "You’ve been through hell tonight."
"I could say the same to you," I replied softly, stepping closer to shelter against the terrace overhang. "Dominic... Falcone mentioned a shipment at the harbor. What did he mean?"
Dominic looked out over the Hudson River, where distant cargo ships moved slowly through the fog. "The Brooklyn syndicate isn't just trying to kill me. They’re bringing in an illicit weapons shipment tomorrow at dawn—advanced military hardware meant to wipe out every family allied with the Moretti name in one coordinated strike. If that ship unloads its cargo, New York becomes a war zone."
"Then call the federal authorities," I urged. "Let them intercept it."
Dominic gave a bitter, humorless smile. "The port authority in that sector is owned by the syndicate. The moment federal agents move, the syndicate will detonate the containers at the pier, taking out three city blocks. The only way to stop it is to board the vessel quietly, neutralize the command crew, and scuttle the shipment before it touches American soil."
My heart seized with sudden terror. "You're going yourself."
"I have to," Dominic said, stepping closer until our bodies were mere inches apart. He reached out, his hand cupping my cheek, his fingers sliding into my hair. "Ethan is my blood. But you and Lily... you showed me that there is still something pure worth dying for in this wretched world. I won't let these monsters take away the light you brought into my house."
My voice trembled. "Don't talk about dying. Ethan needs his father. And... we need you."
Dominic’s breath hitched. In the quiet roar of the city rain, his hand tightened behind my neck, pulling me toward him. When his lips met mine, it wasn't the kiss of a cold, calculated mafia boss—it was fierce, desperate, and filled with a raw, undeniable hunger that had been building between us for years beneath the surface of silence and duty.
I melted into his embrace, my hands gripping the fabric of his shirt as the world outside faded into nothingness.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, his voice was a ragged whisper. "I will come back to you, Clara. I swear it."
Suddenly, the terrace door slid open, and Marco appeared, his face pale as a ghost. "Boss... we have a catastrophic problem in the nursery."
