Chapter 7 - A LEGACY OF LOVE

Seven Months Later.

The early summer sun poured through the French doors of the private terrace at Vance Manor, illuminating a breathtaking nursery decorated in soft creams, warm woods, and emerald accents. A gentle breeze carried the scent of blooming jasmine and lavender from the vast gardens below.

I stood by the white bassinet, dressed in a flowing linen sundress, looking down at the sleeping angel inside.

Leo Vance Sterling.

He had entered the world forty-eight hours ago—a healthy, robust eight-pound baby boy with a thick tuft of dark hair and deep, knowing slate-gray eyes that he certainly hadn't inherited from the Sterling bloodline.

The door clicked open softly, and Damian walked in.

Gone was the unapproachable titan of Wall Street. He had discarded his suit jacket and rolled his white shirt sleeves up to his elbows. The ruthless lines of his face had softened over the past seven months, replaced by an easy, genuine warmth that only ever revealed itself within these walls.

He walked over quietly, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin gently on my shoulder. His large, warm hand rested protectively over my hip.

"Is he sleeping?" Damian whispered, his chest vibrating against my back.

"Finally," I smiled, leaning my head against his cheek. "He has your stubbornness. He refused to close his eyes until he had surveyed every single corner of the room."

Damian let out a soft laugh that sent a pleasant warmth straight to my heart. "He needs to know his kingdom."

A heavy, formal envelope sat on the changing table nearby. I glanced at it, knowing its contents.

The final judicial proceedings regarding the Sterling family had concluded yesterday. Ryan had been sentenced to twenty-five years at a federal penitentiary with no chance of early parole. Eleanor had been forced to surrender all remaining family heirlooms to settle bankruptcy debts and was now living in a modest state-run assisted facility, forgotten by the high society she once worshipped. Chloe was serving time in Florida for grand larceny.

The past was truly, completely buried.

Damian reached over, picked up the envelope, and tossed it into the small wastebasket beside the door without even opening it.

"Trash doesn't belong in the nursery," he murmured softly, turning me gently in his arms so I was facing him.

He looked down at me with an intensity that took my breath away, just as it had every day since that rainy night.

"I spoke with the estate attorneys this morning," Damian said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small velvet box. "The legal adoption paperwork is finalized. Leo is officially, legally, and spiritually a Vance. He will inherit everything I have ever built."

My eyes welled with happy tears. "Damian... you've already given us more than we could ever ask for."

"Not quite everything," Damian replied, dropping to one knee before me.

He opened the velvet box. Inside lay an exquisite, radiant-cut yellow diamond ring, surrounded by a delicate halo of emeralds—vibrant, brilliant, and full of life.

"Madeline," Damian took my trembling left hand, his voice steady, deep, and overflowing with devotion. "Eleven years ago, I fell in love with a woman I thought I could never have. I watched you endure hell, and I watched you emerge from the ashes stronger and more magnificent than ever. You gave this house a heart. You gave me a family. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"

Looking down at the man who had pulled me from the gutter, who had shielded me with his own body, and who loved my son with every fiber of his being, there was no hesitation left in my heart.

"Yes," I whispered, tears spilling freely down my smiling cheeks. "A thousand times, yes."

Damian slipped the ring onto my finger—a perfect fit, replacing the ghost of an old platinum band with an unbreakable promise of devotion. He stood, cupping my face in his warm hands, and pulled me into a kiss that tasted of freedom, redemption, and an endless future.

From the bassinet beside us, little Leo let out a soft, contented coo.

We pulled apart, laughing quietly, and looked down together at the sleeping miracle who had brought down an empire and built a dynasty of genuine love.

The storm was over. The kingdom was ours.
